THE EQUATOR MONUMENT |

ive kilometers north of the centre of Pontianak one can find the precise
spot at which the Equator bisects the city. In an instant the visitor
can travel between the Northern & Southern hemispheres. Marking this
spot is a monument founded in 1928 by Dutch Astronomical Expedition. Ten
years later, the "Monument Khatulistiwa"
was further developed by an Indonesia architect by the name Sylaban.A
unique natural phenomena cam be observed twice a year at the side of the
monument. During the vernal & Autumnal Equinox (21 - 23 March and September)
the path of the sun over the monument is such that exactly at noon and
no shadow is cast by the monument's spire. This Solar Culmination is visible
for is period of only 5 - 10 minutes
