Michael has an older brother named Charles (called Chuck), an older sister named Kasey, and a baby sister named Melanie. His main hobbies are baseball, diving, singing, dancing, and acting.

Michael attended Bayside High School where he graduated in 1995, after which he went to The University of Illinois in Chicago. He originally attended on a diving scholarship, but since then decided that acting and singing were more his style. So he quit the diving team and auditioned for the school's show choir. He played Munkustrap in the CATS video and has since been in various other shows. He is now recreating his role as Munkustrap in the final performances of CATS on Broadway after which he will be playing the role of The Emcee in Cabaret.

Michael began dating Rebecca Parker while he was a senior in high school. Since then, although they've had a rocky path, they have been head over heels in love. They recently married and are now living in a town house on Lake Michigan in Chicago. However, while Michael is in a show, they have an apartment across from Central Park in New York.
