Margaret has been burning it up at school. The biggest improvement has been her reading. She was bored with children's books, the problem being her love for mystery, science fiction and horror. About six months ago we bought her a book called "Night of the living yogurt monster" and she loved it. Currently she's in the middle of a book called "Locker 13" (it has a locker with a screaming skull on the cover). The reading has improved her math. The teacher wants her to pick up speed, but other then that she is doing better. She's got a great teacher this year, Miss Yamamoto. Miss Yamamoto was a 6th grade teacher an is pretty strict. Most teachers deal with the squeaky wheel first, but not her. She tells me that she really appreciates how sweet and self controlled Margaret is and keeps an eye out for Margaret so she does not fall behind. Miss Yamamoto nominated Margaret for student of the month on the first month of school. So the bottom line, math a little below level, reading at level, and rounding out her grade was creative writing. Her teacher just loves her stories, the sample below was one of my favorites. It was about holloween. The teacher was impressed by her description. I like that she never tells you what she was, all the other kids told you what they were in the first line and the rest was about why they picked there costume. After school, she is in the science club. They do experiments and read about the planets. Margaret is most proud of the fact that she learned to ride a bike this year. The bike was a great fear of hers that she over came.

My Costume

By Margaret Muniz

Rotten teeth are popping out of his mouth. A saggy shirt hangs sloppy on him. A big hat covers his head. Ripped shoes flop on his feet. Black hair covers his face. A big back sticks out behind him. Do you know who I am?
