A former sociology Professor at University of Prague, at the outbreak of the First World War escaped to France (Czechoslovakia was part of the Absburgh empire) where along with Thomas Masaryk founded the Czechoslovakian National Counsel.

After the Versailles Peace, was designed foreign affairs minister of the newly founded Republic of Czechoslovakia, in which position worked to establish fair relationships through all Europe.

When Masaryk retired in 1935 took his charge as President of the Republic.

Resigned this charge to protest the Munich agreement, and went voluntarily to exile.

During the war leaded from England the Exile Government of his country and organized undergruond activities, among which the successful attempt to Reinhard Heydrich's life..

President of the Republic in 1946, died shortly after soviet seizure of 1948.
