| Jorge Luis Borges' "The Garden of Forking Paths" makes so much sense to me, especially because he discusses how complex yet pertinent choices in life are not only for the here and now but also for the future. I also completely agree with Borges' anti-fatalist view on life. I have gotten into arguments with people for being an anti-fatalist. Many have mistaken me for being atheist because of this view. The truth of the matter is, I am a devout Hindu and believe in the power of religion. To me, all religions are true, for they all lead a person towards some sort of divine being. In my perspective, all religions are just as good as mine in point of view and say the exact same thing in a different manner. An analogy to this is how one can say "hello" in the thousands of languages in existance, but they all mean essentially the same thing. This type of thinking can be applied to religion. Likewise, I sincerely feel that the life of a person is in their hands. Albert discusses Dr. Yu Tsun's ancestor in "The Garden of Forking Paths," discovering that "He believed in an infinite series of times, in a growing, dizzying net of divergent, convergent and parallel times." In life, one must make key decisions everyday. Even choices that seemingly seem trivial have greater consequences in the larger picture of life. For example, I could have driven to a local gas station to buy gas because I was lazy, or I could have made the choice to drive a mile further to get cheaper gas, or I could have decided to ride my bike instead, or carpool with a friend, or... The list literally goes on and on, and the important thing to note here is that, although this particular example seems mundane and insignificant, it is the exact same way to approach any decision in life. Every little choice we make every day leads the human being to consequences they may never have thought of, or specific goals in the not so far off future, or the next rung in the ladder towards maturity. Whatever the case, every person faces forking paths in their lives everyday, and it is up to the traveller of life to choose the best route towards their destination. |
