In this family you can also find the Smooth softshell turtle (Apalone mutica) wich is less agresive but fisicaly alike. Most of this turtles can't co-habit with other turtles species, when they get older. This turtles (Softshells) are very agresive, some people think they are as agresive as the snapers turtles). This turtles can stay underwater for hours due to the breathing methods they use. They can breath of diferent part of their body even their skin Characteristics: Softshell turtles instead of an outer hard layer on they carapace (upper part of the turtles shell), they have a leathery skin. This lighter, more flexible shell suits their aquating existence and is the result of the evolution process of this species after hiding for years under rocks in the botom of ponds and lakes. This turtles jaws are very sharp and they can use it as a defense, they also have a long snorkel like snout that allows them to breathe while keeping te res of their body under the surface. They are fast swimmers and rarely leave water. Diet: Smooth softshells are good hunters and will love live food (guppys and small fish), they will also eat mollusks, crustaceans, insects, worms and even frogs. |
