I Wish This Moment Would Last Forever

“I can’t believe we’re doing this,” J.J. said breathing hard as her feet pounded the ground.

“I can’t believe we’ve still got 10 miles left!” Rachel gasped.

It was the Chicago marathon and Rachel and J.J. were attempting to run 26 miles.  Since the fall semester, both had trained to run the marathon in their high schools, joining a team of students determined to do what they thought was personally impossible.  Rachel and J.J. however, had a much deeper cause for running.  Both were running for the American Brain Tumor Association.  All proceeds went to brain cancer research.  Everyone from the ER sponsored both Rachel and J.J. for each mile they completed in the marathon.

Little by little, the miles the girls covered slipped by, and finally, they crossed the finish line.

“I am so sore!” Rachel yelled as a marathon volunteer helped her to a tent where T-shirts proving they completed the marathon, water and food waited for them.

J.J. immediately pulled off her shoes as soon as she sat on a cot under the tent and began rubbing her feet.

“Rachel?” she asked, seeing her friend stare off in the distance.

Rachel’s mind was far from Chicago.  She felt a breeze brush her hair and imagined Mark smiling in the distance.

“I love you, Dad,” she whispered.
