~
"It's curious the things that make your mind wander" thought Evelyn. She was sitting in the afternoon shade while the three men in her life played Cricket , and it was hilarious to watch. The only one who was any good was Jonathan, it was a skill aquired from his years in Oxford, along with his taste for Scotch. England's warm spring breeze was more preferable to her these days than the arid heat of the desert. Although Egypt was one of her life's passions she needed to be away from it, for now at  least. She needed to recover from the terrors which lurked in ancient ruins, not least of all her 'death'. She wondered what would have become of her men if Alex hadn't been able to bring her back.  Would they really have been as desolate as she imagined? Surely, in time they would have found their  will to carry on without her, after all, she loved each of them for their strength and determination. Well, perhaps that wasn't the best description for Jonathan, but she felt sure he would have found his own way sooner or later. And what of herself, being deprived of her time with Rick and Alex. It was too terrible to contemplate and it always made her shiver whenever the thought took over her mind. Anyway, she had other matters at hand and in being here she had found a peace of heart.

She smiled as Rick threw his hands above his head in frustration at being bowled and heard him shout "That's it! Game over." He'd only played to appease Alex, but now he'd clearly had enough. Besides, he'd seen a more inviting spot beside his wife. He walked away with cries of "Oh, come on! Unfair" echoing behind him. "You guys can do great without me" he shouted in return as he absent mindly waved his arm behind him. "Dumb game in any case" he mumbled.

Evelyn watched him approach. How many times had she seen him walk up to her with that smile on his face? Always so happy to see her. Always so in love with her. She didn't take her eyes off him as he came nearer and memories of him moved over her. She had never had any man other than Rick, but she knew her marriage was different to those of her friends, it was obvious from the way they spoke. The regard some of them had for the men in their lives was bordering on indifference. Did they  ever have the passion she had always enjoyed? She remembered her wedding night, nervously standing  in front him as she wondered what to do next. In her mind's eye she saw him again as if it were now. She  watched as he cupped her face in his hands and kissed her forehead, her nose, her lips, deep into her mouth  as his hands slipped down her spine to her hips then back up her sides to rest on bosom. His kisses draped down her neck to where they met his hands and one by one he unbuttoned her blouse kissing
her flesh as he exposed it. By the time he had her naked breast in his mouth she was ready to swoon. Her own hands were moving awkwardly, so he held them and guided them. If she'd ever had any doubt of his desire for her, it was now being put to rest. He laid her on the bed and covered her with his body, his hands still creating tingles up and down her thighs and beyond. His fingers explored her with the deepest intimacy while his mouth nibbled her neck, her shoulders, her breasts. By the time his body
entered hers she was practically screaming from the sensation.

"Daydreaming again?" Rick was sitting beside her in the shade, looking at her curiously. "What mad schemes have you got running about in your head this time?"

"Why do you always assume I'm conjuring up mad schemes?"

"Well, usually you are" he kissed her "of one kind or another".

"It only serves to make your life interesting" she quipped

"Interestingly scary." he agreed as he slightly moved away "Ha, can't get me! Your hands are full" he laughed.

Alex and Jonathan were getting into a heated arguement over the game. Rick shook his head "You'd  think by now they'd have run out of things to fight about. I swear, they're the perfect foil for each other"

"Jonathan couldn't be without him" Evelyn mused as she listened to her son and brother thrash it out.

"You okay, Evie?" Rick was leaning over trying to regain her attention.

"Oh, I'm fine" she said, turning to look at him "It's just that things are bound to catch up sooner or later."

"Things like...?"

"Do you remember the day Alex was born?" she asked, looking directly at her husband.

Rick moved closer to her, putting one arm around Evelyn's shoulders and his other hand on the head of the infant nestled in her arms. "Yeah, I remember. Very clearly in fact, apart from you I was the only one there!" He wasn't sure where she was taking this "So, we're heading down memory lane, are we?"

Evelyn rested her head on Rick's shoulder and looked to where Alex was still arguing with his uncle and was surprised to see Jonathan throw the bat to the ground in disgust. "No, not just memories. Contrast."

"Meaning? Evie, you're talking in riddles"

"He's such a bright light in our lives, yet he was born on the most awful of days and without help. Remember?" she asked looking up at him.

"I was there! Remember??"answered Rick somewhat astounded "I helped!! And yeah, it was raining".

"No silly" she was laughing at him "That's what I mean, it was just you and me struggling on our own in awful conditions and he still made it safely. His being here had purpose, without him we'd have none of this!" She was looking deep into Rick's eyes "I wouldn't be here now without him, nor would Brigit."

Rick looked down at his tiny daughter, content to suckle on her mother's breast, and gently moved his large fingers over the top of her head. Just five weeks old, but she had a strangle hold on his heart.

"She's not supposed to be here, you know." Evie whispered to him "I healed in some way or another when Alex brought me back. It's the only explaination I can find for Brigit being here at all."

Rick knew what she meant "Mmm, you mean she shouldn't be here because of the miscarriage. Because of what it did to you." He also knew that deep down she still blamed herself.

"Sometimes I can still feel the forceps." The grief in her eyes was as fresh as the day it happened "Oh Rick, I tried so hard to hold onto that baby, I fought with everything I had and still lost."

"That's why you were so badly hurt. You struggled too much, your body couldn't take it" He was stroking her face, catching a single tear "You almost died as well . There was no choice Evie, you didn't have much time and the baby was already gone. I was hanging onto you with the same determination. I managed to keep you with me that time." He kissed her.

"Do you remember the first time you made love to me after the baby died?"

"My, your mind IS jumping around today, isn't it?" He smiled at her.

"Do you?"

"You want details?" His wife never ceased to amaze him "It was ages after. You were hurt, Evie...and very
sick, for a long time."

"Yes, but when we did, it was desperate, almost raw and we cried. Remember?"

"Evie, I remember...and she's finished" Rick took his daughter while Evie buttoned her blouse. "She always
looks drunk after feeding. Kinda reminds me of you."

"Don't try to change the subject."

This wasn't turning out the way he'd imagined when he walked away from the game with Jonathan and Alex. All he wanted to do was sit with Evelyn and hold his daughter. "What do you want me say, Evie? That I remember every time we've made love or just the first time, or the times when things were tough? He was  becoming exasperated "I remember them. Everything. When Alex was born. Every tear you cried when the baby died...every scream for each baby". He was speaking softly now, a little mad at himself "I remember how  desperately alone I felt when you died in my arms."

"I was getting to that."

"I thought you might be." He moved the baby to his rest on his chest.

"That night, the passion, the desire, the drive was the exactly the same as it was nine years ago when we suffered terribly but survived. Lovemaking that ended mourning. When Alex brought me back, I was healed. We made her." Evelyn touched her daughter's cheek. "Don't you see, Rick? She's caught up with us again, after all these years, whatever kept her away was banished when Alex read from the book."

He knew there was something in what she said. As much as he prefered to ignore all this mystical past lives, reincarnation hokum, Evelyn and Ardeth had done a good job in turning him around. Alex pressed the point when he resurrected his mother. "I see your point. It makes a kind of sense. As much as CAN made  with such strange circumstances. We could tell a thousand people this story and we'd be lucky if just one person believed us."

Evelyn was giving him the 'you know I'm right' look.

"Okay." he smiled at her and lifted Brigit into his line of vision. "So, who was this little one in ancient times?'

"I don't know that." Evelyn answered "But I do know that she's been near us for a long time, just waiting for her opportunity be born."

"And she still looks like you when you're drunk." Rick teased as he leaned in to kiss his wife.

"Ha ha, It's time to take the little madam inside, the air is getting cooler" said Evelyn as she got up. Rick followed  her carrying Brigit. Jonathan and Alex could still be heard in the distance. "What on earth are they arguing about?"

"Not sure exactly" answered Rick "but it's got something to do with Leg Before Wicket. I really don't understand that game."

********************
Upstairs, Rick placed his sleeping daughter into her cot "She snores like you as well, you know." he said and Evelyn  playfully slapped his arm. He caught her hand, drew her in and kissed her deeply, then pulled back to look at her.

"Don't stop there." He kissed her again, just as passionately then paused again. "Or there" was her response.

"Where do you want me to stop?"

"After you make me scream." her voice was only a whisper, but he heard every word.

"What?? Evelyn...are you sure?" His hands were stroking her hair "I mean, I don't want to hurt you...you know,
after the baby."

"I'm fine." She was kissing him

"Fine." He could hardly get the word out

"Make me scream" she said the words into his mouth

Rick pulled at her skirt, lifting it until his hands touched her thighs. Her skin was always so soft, it drove him wild every time he touched her body. He moved his hands higher to feel the silk of her knickers, squeezing her cheeks as he pulled her into him. Evelyn's hands had dropped to his belt. The rattling sound it made as she undid the buckle made him kiss her harder, deeper, squeeze her closer. "Evie was right" he thought "Lovemaking does have a certain  desperation to it after having a baby." She moved his trousers down just enough so she could slip her hand inside to feel his throbbing erection and squeezed it tightly and slowly.

Rick let out a deep groan "Evie, slow down...just a little sweetheart."

"I want you, Rick, now!"

He loved her in this mood. She seems to be in control but soon she'd beg for him to touch her. He pulled down her knickers and let them drop to the floor, then squeezed her into him again. She was breathless, rubbing her leg along the side of his, trying to lift herself higher. He smiled into her neck and he ran his tongue upto her jaw and closed in on her mouth, then worked his way down the other side of her neck.

"Oh Rick, please! Touch me!"

He put one hand around her waist and with the other he gently rubbed the inside of her leg. Now, kissing her softly, and deliberately slowly he moved his hand higher up the inside of her thigh until he touched her craving. Warm and wet, he moved his fingers over her, inside her. She pushed against him, arms around his neck pulling him down onto her. He put both hands on her waist to lift her and she wrapped her legs around his hips. He moved to carry her to the bed and bumped into the dresser. It seemed an impossible task to get around it.

"This is fine" she said rubbing herself against him.

He put his hand under her skirt once more and slowly began to rub her, revelling in her wetness, her smell, her need. He  entered her body so slowly, so carefully as not to hurt her in case she wasn't as ready as she thought. She accepted him with a groan, wrapping her legs tightly around him. He pushed into her, moving inside her with the same pace as he entered. With each thrust he opened a button on her blouse, watching her expression as he did. He didn't quicken his pace until he had one breast free from her bra and firmly in his hand. She was incoherent by now, only able to call his name. Tilting her slightly, he started to move back and forth with greater force, as her legs tightened around him, the faster he moved. She was groaning, panting getting louder as he pushed her closer to climax. He was struggling to control himself, she was hot and so wet and pleading with him to bring her to finish. She squeezed her fingers into his back and he covered her mouth with his as her body began to shake around him. He came with her, pushing deep and hard ,spilling  himself inside her.

"Oh Rick, I've missed you." panted Evelyn

"No kidding!" he laughed "You'll get more babies than you bargained for if you keep this up. Oh look! There's the bed over there. He carried her to the bed and laid with her in his arms while he regained his senses.

Evelyn ran her finger along her husbands jaw "We've come full circle, Rick. We struggled and fought and we've made it. We have our life back and now we get to watch it play out together."

He looked into her eyes and hoped what she said meant she was content. That she wasn't going to yearn for Egypt's mysteries and dark secrets any longer. But knowing her as he did, he knew that was too much to hope for. If she lost that, she wouldn't be Evie. Perhaps it was himself who was finally content. Having Evie back with him, seeing her pregnant again and surviving the birth was a miracle to him. And his tiny daughter had a bigger influence over him than he cared to admit. He kissed his wife softly, she was right, they had come full circle.
