~
It was late when the brave heros of Hamunaptra, arrived back at the fort, and everyone was glad to be away from that god forsaken place. They had only made one stop along the way, on the first night after getting away from the cursed city, the rest of the three day trip, they road through night and day, to arrive this night, a clear cool night, a night of many stars. On his camel, Rick held Evelyn in his arms. She had been asleep for almost 3 hours, and he was glad. Everything they had been through had been difficult on them all, but for Evelyn it was the most difficult. Being part of the curse, brought back the memories of how her parents had died, and that, added to what they had been through, had been too much for the beautiful woman he held in his arms. As they stopped Rick softly commanded his camel to lay down. When it did he carefully dismounted, happy that the movement didnt wake her. He waited for Jonathan to take the camels to their stalls, and while he did, he thought about how his life had suddenly changed. Before this the only thing that mattered to him was adventure, and drinking. Now he loved Evelyn, not just love, there was more to it than that. There had been a time a long ago when he met her as a child, and had taken her on her first adventure. Of coarse he had not known that, the day they met in Cairo Prison, but the first time they kissed, the first time he had placed a kiss on her head, the night they had spent out in the desert after Hamunaptra, had brought back the memories of that time. Then, and now he felt responsible, in a way for keeping her safe, but also, now, he wanted to show her how much he loved her. It was Jonathans scream that woke her, and sent him running into the stall.

Whats wrong? Rick stopped when he saw what was wrong, or in their case very right. Four bags of gold and treasure from Hamunaptra.

Rick...Rick, Evelyn said. He shook his head.

What Evelyn.

Id like you to put me down now please. He did apologizing. After putting her down he got a bucket of water and splashed it on Jonathan who had passed out.

What the hell was that for OConnell, came Jonathans response. He stood, and for a moment all any of them could do was look. Then Evelyn snapped everyone into action.

We need to get this up to my room at once. Neither of the men argued about her keeping it in her suite, and after putting it in some of the Rucksacks they had, they unloaded the rest of their supplies, and went into the Forts hotel, and up to their Suites.

Where did this come from? Jonathan asked. Rick knew, and gave them both the answer.

Im fairly sure that Benny decided to take some of the gold.

Well may god bless that odd little fellow, came Jonathans response.

If you two dont mind, I want to catalog these, and then together we can decide what to do with it. They both nodded.

Well go on to our rooms, Rick told her, not really sure if he should leave her alone. She nodded too interested in the historical value of what they had found to fear any of the dreams she had during their trip home. Once they had gone, Evelyn categorized what was found. Basically the solid gold things she put on her bed, and anything that was more than just gold, such as gold and some sort of precious stone, she put on her table. Once sorted she got a pad and piece of paper and started pricing things. It was almost an hour later when Rick knocked on her door.

Come in, she said. When he did, he found her settled on her bed, and everything back in the bags. He pulled a chair over and sat down.

So whats the word?

If we split it three ways then we each get 2 million a piece. I want to put some of it, my share in the museum to display. You and Jonathan can do what you want with yours. You may get more if you use a private buyer, she explained. He nodded.

How are you feeling? He asked. She smiled at him.

Better now that Im away from that place. I want to thank you for being there for me. He stood and sat on her bedside. He placed a hand against her cheek and she closed her eyes.

Do you remember our first adventure? She nodded opening her eyes to look in his.

I never cared about anyone except me, and there was something about you that made me change my mind, he told her. Her heart thudded painfully. She was scared. There had never been anyone in her life she had loved, not like this, and she was so afraid he would leave her.

I never felt I needed anyone until that day, she admitted. He leaned in and kissed her lips gently, and when he pulled away she was trembling. Rick scooted onto the bed and held her in his arms.

Tell me what your afraid of. She didnt want to admit she was afraid, not like this.
Im just cold. Rick held her away looking at her.

Its hot in here. She looked away, and he let her go.

I should probably get some sleep. Jonathan and I want to go out tomorrow and see if we can find buyers for the treasure. She nodded her heart screaming for him to come back, but did nothing to stop his retreat. When he was gone, she barried her face in her pillow and cried.

The next morning she awoke to the sun streaming through her window. As she sat up she noticed a vase with a beautiful flower in it, one indigenous to here. She walked over to the table and found a note under it. In the note, Rick asked her to meet him for dinner tonight, at a very romantic restaurant. That brought a smile to her face, and she held the note close to her heart. While she sorted the treasure into three equal piles, getting it ready for the three of them to use, the guys had locate several reputable buyers for the gold. Now they were on their way back to the base with the buyer they felt most confident would buy all of what they had. He was an American, very well to do, and they both hoped they could get more from him than what Evy had said.

Its in the other room, if youll sit here with my partner, Ill get it, Rick said. He went to Evelyns room and knocked, but it was locked, and she wasnt there. Silently Rick cursed and went down to the desk.

Has anyone left any messages for me? Rick gave the head of the hotel his name, and he gave Rick a key and a note. Evelyn told him she had their treasure ready, and go ahead in the room. She added that she would meet him for dinner, which made his heart race.

Night fell, and Evelyn arrived at the small restaurant a little late. A little man came up, and asked her if she was waiting for anyone

Yes, a gentleman, Rick OConnell. The man led her into the restaurant and toward the back was Rick. When he saw their approach he stood, and when she came to the table he pulled the chair out for her. When she was seated he pushed her chair closer to the table.

So how was your luck with the buyers? she asked feeling nervous.

Very good. We were able to sell all of it to two buyers, and got a little more than you said. What about you? She smiled.

The museum was grateful to get it. The waiter came and offered them wine, and Rick picked what he wanted and once it was poured he lifted his glass.

To adventures, he said, feeling like a heal. He had wanted to say to adventure and great love, but his bravado left him. They clinked glass and took a sip. Dinner was a quiet affair, with neither of them saying much, other than to comment on the food. When they finished, Rick suggested they take a walk, and they soon found themselves in one of the cities small gardens. They sat on a small bench, then Rick stood and paced.

Rick? she asked nervous. What was he so uptight about, was he going to leave? She prayed not because honestly she wasnt sure she could take him leaving her. He seemed to resolve something, and came back to her getting down on one knee. Evelyn felt her heart race, and wondered if this was a dream.

Evelyn. I know we havent known each other for very long, but I love you, honestly I loved you that first time I met you. If we went our separate ways I dont think there would ever be anyone else I would love. I want you to marry me. She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath, then opened them when she felt him take her left hand and slip onto it a beautiful ring. It had a small diamond in the middle and was surrounded by small rubies. She nodded her head unable to speak, and he took her into his arms helping her stand. They held each other for a long time neither saying anything.

So, when would you like to get married? he asked her gently holding her away. Tears were still falling down her face, and Rick leaned in and kissed them away.

Would a week be too soon? She asked timidly. He pulled her back into his arms.

A week would be just fine. He started to chuckle, and she pulled away.

What?

I cant wait to see Jonathans face when we tell him. She had forgotten about her brother and laughed with him. Then she got a serious look on her face.

We can live in my parents house here in Cairo, but I cant kick him out. Rick kissed her gently on the lips.

He can stay with us. She hugged him again loving that he was willing to put up with Jonathan and his antics.

He should be there, lets go tell him, she said anxious to see what he would say. The walk to the house was not long, and when they arrived Jonathan was getting ready to leave. He noticed something different about both of them.

What have you two been drinking, he asked.

Not a thing. Jonathan Rick and I are going to be married in a week. His response was better than they expected he passed out cold.
