Chapter: 4  Evelyns Reminder

It was a cold snowy January night when Evelyn went into labor.  Nanna and Jonathan had stayed at her side throughout the ordeal until after 27 hours of pushing, crying, and screaming she gave birth to a healthy 6 pound baby boy, whom she chose to name Alexander Jonathan OConnell, giving him the last name of his father, to carry on that name.  Now a week had passed by, and Evelyn was finally feeling herself after several days of bed rest.  During that time, Nanna, and Jonathan had been wonderful about taking care of all of Alexs needs with the exception of feeding him, something only she could do.  It was her determined spirit that got her out of bed on the third morning after his arrival, and since then Evelyn had been tending to his needs, letting Jonathan and Nanna help when they wanted.  Now in the quiet of their room, Evelyn sat with him cradled in her arms showing him the leather wrist band that had once been his fathers.  Alex was watching her as she talked.

When I met him he was filthy.  He had long hair, and was in dire need of a shave.  He also kissed me without my permission, but I think it was then that I knew I loved him,  Evelyn said as she looked down at he son who had gone to sleep.  With a sigh, Evie stood up and carried him to his cradle gently laying him down, then took Ricks leather wrist band and held it to her nose.

We miss you Rick,  she said, then put the band away in her jewelry box before getting dressed to start her day.  She and Alex were going to the museum, something Evelyn had missed in the three weeks she had stayed home while waiting for her baby to be born.  Evelyn went to her closet and selected a long warm skirt and a button down top so that when Alex needed to be fed she could do it with ease.  Once she had her cloths ready she quickly started to get dressed, and smiled as Nanna came with a Satchel for her baby.

You be careful out there today, its dreadfully cold,  Nanna informed.

I will.  Do you mind to get his sweater on him?  Evie asked.  That was something Nanna was very good at, getting Alex dressed.  Both Evelyn and Jonathan still had a lot to learn.  Once both of them were ready, Evelyn had Adam, their driver take them to the Museum.

It had been a while since Sam had been in Paris, busy with missions of his own, and it was upon his return, going through his files, and other files that only he and other high ranking officials could see, that he found out about Ricks death.  Shocked and a little angry that he had not been informed, Sam went to General Dubiels office and confronted him.

When was I going to be told?  he all but yelled.  He and the General had never seen eye to eye.

Calm down.  Corporal OConnell is alive and well and on a mission in Israel at the moment.  That was just a mis understanding,  he said.  After his meeting with the General Sam knew something was amiss, but also knew that being Ricks friend, that he would likely be watched, so he would have to be very careful to uncover what the Legion was up to.

It was around two and a half weeks old that Alex started to be more wakeful at night, and though Nanna had offered to be up with him, Evelyn declined her offer wanting to care for him then as well.  Having just put him down not ten minutes ago, Evelyn heard him stirring, and set down the book she was reading.  The advise she had been given from her doctor, and even from Nanna was to let him cry, but she couldnt stand to leave him for too long.  For a moment she waited, thinking he might go back to sleep, but he did not and started to cry.  For a moment more Evelyn waited then went to him.

Shh, Mummy is here my little one,  Evelyn crooned as she lifted him out.  It took a moment, but Alex settled down once he felt her gentle touch, and heard her soft voice.  What amazed Evelyn was how alert he was already at such a young age, and she smiled.

Do you want to help mummy do some research?  she asked as she carried him back to her bed.  Evelyn settled down transferring him from against her shoulder to the crook of her left arm before she picked up a book she was reading on Ancient times and began with a story for him.

Once in a great land, ruled a Pharaoh called Seti,  she began.  As she read Alex watched her focused on her, and it was the sound of his mothers voice that lulled him to sleep once again.

Being the head of the Egyptian section, and also being revered by the Bembridge Scholars, Evelyn had her way with pretty much anything she wanted.  The Curator, a Mr, Havez, was a shifty fellow, and not someone she was fond of, though he never gave her much notice, to busy running the museum as though it were his.  Now Evie sat at her desk writing a letter to the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo while Alex had his lunch.  He was nearly seven months old, and quite used to being at the museum with her.  For that matter everyone in the museum came by her office, when Mr. Havez was not there, to pay him a visit, and to bring him a toy, but Alexs favorite visitor was his uncle Jonathan.  Jonathan had been the first one to get a smile from him, and Evelyn was happy that Alex seemed to be having a positive affect on her brother.  Most of the time Jonathan managed to stay sober when he was around the house, though Evie guessed that Nanna had told him she would ring his neck if he ever came home drunk, and despite her size difference, Evelyn and Jonathan knew she could easily handle him if she had to.

Evie?  came her voice from outside the door.  After setting her pen down, Evelyn called out for her to come in, and Nanna did briging lunch.  Since Evelyn had a meeting with a few of the more distinguished Scholars, Nanna was going to take Alex home with her, and Evie would go home after her meeting.

You have wonderful timing,  Evelyn said as Alex relaxed in sleep.  Carefully Evelyn lifted her son away from her breast covering herself, then rubbed his back until she got a burp, and placed him in the playpen.  Now that he could   sit up, the bassinet wasnt safe for him to rest in, and the playpen offered him more space to stretch out.

I thought Jonathan was coming to get him,  Evelyn said as she settled on the couch beside the white haired woman.  Nanna was small, almost five feet but not quite, and had waves of white hair which she always kept pinned back, except for at night.

He did say that, but Gloria asked him to have lunch for her, so I came in his place,  Nanna explained.  Evelyn smiled, always happy to spend time with her.  In many ways Nanna was a second mother to her, and was always there to give her advise, which lately she needed with Alex, who had been going through a phase in his life where he only wanted mum.

Do you mind if Alex and I spend some time in the Park?  she asked.  Evelyn took a bite of the ham and cheese sandwich Nanna had made and quickly chewed that up, swallowing before she answered.
Please do.  Its such a lovely day, and I think he might enjoy that,  she said.  Once the two of them had concluded lunch Nanna put the harness on and Evelyn managed to get her baby in that without a fuss.

Be safe,  she said as she gave both of them a hug and a kiss.  Once they had gone, Evelyn cleaned up the things she had used with Alex there, then got back to work writing her letter.

The playground of the park was full of children at play, and most of them there with their Nannies.  Nanna had spread out a large blanket, and with Alex awake, she had put out toys for him to play with. Quite suddenly a little girl ran over, someone Nanna knew

Well Hello there Megan,  Nanna said to the almost two year old child.

Pay if dose,  she said wanting Alexs blocks, which he was content to play with.

Why dont you play with this bear,  Nanna said smiling as Emily, Megans mother came over.

Megan, you need to be careful,  she admonished, then settled down with Nanna, and the two of them talked.

Im just amazed at how strong Evelyn is.  I know if Paul were to pass on, I would have a difficult time trying to function without him,  she said.  Alex started to fuss when Megan took his block, and Nanna quickly got him occupied with the bear that Megan  had abandoned.

All right young lady, lets get home so we can have dinner ready for your daddy,  Emily said.  Megan cried, but Emily was determined, and after the two of them left, Nanna got Alex situated in his sling and they left for home.

It had taken Sam nearly nine months of careful investigation, but after that time, he came across letters, all addressed to Richard OConnell.  Feeling like a thief, but needing to know why the Legion would have said his friend was dead, Sam read them and found the cause for the deception.  The letters, all of them, talked about Evelyns pregnancy with his child, and it made sense to Sam why the Legion had told her he was dead.  Rick was still in Israel, and wouldnt be back until his time with the Legion was almost up, but Sam wanted him to know what was going on.  For a few weeks after finding the letters,  Sam dedicated himself to training his own soldiers, and was finally pleased when the General sent them to Israel to fight along side Ricks group.  Sam would tell Rick, and the two of them would find a way to get their revenge on the Legion.
