Chapter 3: Time Alone

The next day after Ricks most trying day, Evelyn took a time off, and was glad when Genevieve came and got the girls for the day.  Now they sat by the fish pond on a soft quilt, and Rick decided to bring up something the girls had told him that was bothering him.

Evie you told me that you were fine with me staying in Germany fighting the war in your letters,  Rick said.  Evelyn nodded.

I was.  You needed to be there, and the military would never have left you alone had you not gone.  But thats over now,  she said as she shook a little.  He gathered her in his arms.

Then why did you cry every night.  The girls told me they would hear you crying after you had put them to bed,  he said.  She felt her heart beat faster and shook her head, holding to him tighter.

Emily Robertson who is our neighbor a few houses down the beach had a husband in the war.  He was killed last year, and that period of time when your letters didnt get to me for months was when I would cry.  I was so frightened Rick, that you had been killed in a bombing, or that the Nazis had caught you and were holding you in one of their camps.  Evelyn shook from the memories of those empty nights, and Rick eased them down to lay on the soft ground.

Evie its over, and Im not going to fight anymore.  The next war they have Ill move us to the ends of the earth to keep all of us together and safe.  Lets just hope there are no more.  Now what I want to do more than anything else is to make love to you, to erase all the lonely times both of us had,  Rick said as he turned her on her back and moved over her.

Make me forget the fear I had Rick,  she said as he began to kiss her lips.  Soon his kisses and touches drove all thoughts away from her other than what he was doing, and the healing both of them needed began.

A little later they went for a walk on the beach, and Rick asked her if she was ready to move back to England.  Evelyn had thought of nothing more since his return, and when he asked she nodded her head.

I just hope its not too much for the girls.  They have lived here for seven years almost,  Evelyn said.  Rick took her hand and held it to his lips kissing her there.

They will be fine.  I think once we get them home, we need to put them in school,  Rick said.  Evelyn had taught them from home, because she had been to afraid to put them in school, afraid that if they were attacked by the Japanese or the Nazis then her daughters would be permanently taken from her.

I agree with that.  They need to make new friends,  Evelyn said.  They walked down the beach to the Pavilion, and Rick paid a man a quarter and threw a baseball at a bunch of stacked bottles winning his wife, or more so his daughters three pink bears.  Once he had done that they headed home.

So what about Egypt?  They also told me, about going to see Jonathan,  he said.  Evelyn smiled and nodded.

We all decided to go after the last time you left.  They were moping, and I was as well so I booked us passage and we left,  she said.  Rick still felt guilty for leaving them, now that he knew how difficult it had been on them, and still felt he needed to make it up to them somehow.

When they arrived home, Rick made them a romantic dinner for two and they sat on the little enclosed porch by candlelight.

Why dont we got to Egypt first and see Jonathan?  I know this sounds insane but I have been itching for adventure the old way.  My choice of enemies to fight are immortal ones,  Rick said which really surprised her.  Evie reached out and felt his head.

Are you feeling all right.  The last time we were in Egypt you had a heat stroke and swore to me we would never return,  Evelyn replied.

I know what I said, but having to fight in that war for four years made me realize how little time we have to do things.  Im not afraid of death, but I dont want to spend my life waiting around, and now that the girls are older, I think you and I need to have time for us,  Rick said.  Evelyn just smiled, and the rest of the evening was spent in their bed making up for lost time and lost love.
