Recently, I have witnessed a lot of debate about the UN / Iraq standoff in Internet chat rooms. Despite public opinion on both sides of the Atlantic that suggests that community spirit isn't totally in support of a war, I have seen numerous Americans giving their half-baked opinion of how their mighty country doesn't need the help of other countries to invade and ultimately defeat the Iraqi regime.
To that end, and despite a track record that suggests stimulating debate cannot be initiated with uneducated dorks, Ciggs Rotten Online Entertainments is pleased to announce a new venture "Ciggs Debates the UN / Iraq Standoff".
My first point pertains to the statement "America doesn't need the help of other countries to invade and ultimately defeat the Iraqi regime"
Talk about nincompoops stating the obvious. Yes the worlds only remaining Superpower could invade Iraq. Yes the country whose Armed Forces manpower out numbers the combined strengths of the next 27 militarily strongest countries, would be victorious. However, despite a reputed 250,000 troops in the Middle East and despite climatic conditions advantageously playing into the hands of the enemy, why haven't they invaded?
Prime Minster Blair has been honest and open about our need for a second UN Resolution and the esteem in which President Bush holds Tony is obvious as America herself is still perusing every possible avenue to obtain the second Resolution, which in turn suggests that America is very much in need of her allies.
Regarding the question "Will America go it alone?" Although a lot of fuss is being made about the political effects an "unjust" war would have on our current Government, I believe that Mr Blair wholeheartedly believes that war is the only way to disarm the Iraqi tyrant and will consequently commit British Troops; regardless of the political implications that could see him becoming unemployed. Further, like Tony, I believe that disarming Saddam via the UN is the correct way ahead as opposed to disarming Iraq without their blessing and to that end, a Security Council majority supported second Resolution, even with 2 of the 3 Axis of Weasels members casting their veto, is moral justification to disarm Iraq by military force. Therefore America, don't even think you'll have to go it alone, Britain will be standing "Shoulder to Shoulder" with you.
Further, not wishing to disrespect the dedication and professionalism of our allies on the other side of the pond who have encountered combat, it has to be said that America, albeit by poor political direction, doesn't exactly have the best track record when fighting wars without allies... Now that my rant is in full swing, I would like to take this opportunity to enlighten some of my many readers with the history of our current standoff.
For 40 years after World War II, democracy and capitalism, the vital beliefs of America, stood steadfast opposing the communist beliefs of the Soviet Union. These two superpowers both believed their policies were correct and attempted to influence the rest of the world with their objectives. However, the collapse of the Soviet Union left America without a much needed counterbalance and all her virtues which were viewed positively during the Cold War now stood out like a sore thumb making her look like a world bully. This fact allied to her unwavering support for Israel made her unpopular with others who are driven by fanaticism, a fanaticism that lacks compassion for human life as clearly displayed on September 11th.
To bring to justice those responsible for this atrocity, America and the UK adopted the principle of taking military action inside a country that sheltered the guilty. Unfortunately that sound and just action was regrettably compromised by poor execution. Dropping the BLU-82 (Daisy Cutter) on cave complexes that were allegedly occupied by the enemy and of course his prized military asset, namely the Mark 1 Donkey, then spending over a year debating if Osama Bin Laden is dead or alive wasn't my definition of justice. Nevertheless despite the disapproval of animal lovers, this action seemed to make the majority of those residing in the world's only superpower happy.
Incidentally, I note with interest today the existence of the MOAB, another over-the-top weapon that has America jumping with joy. Hopefully, dropping a few of these weapons on Baghdad will initiate an even longer debate about the fate of that city's most infamous butcher.
Without resolving the Bin Laden issue, Mr Bush then decided to direct his attention on a contained yet dangerous middle eastern dictator, who incidentally to date has no proven terrorist connection with the aforementioned mad man. That said America; I've established a connection; the letter "Q" in both Al-Qaida and Iraq.
Tact, a monosyllabic word that the majority I've seen typing in chat rooms seem unable to comprehend. Then again, I remember a world superpower dropping more tonnage of bombs than were dropped in the whole of WW II combined, on a certain South East Asian country, against an unknown enemy who were apparently hiding in the jungle.
In summary, right will prevail over wrong but there's a correct way to do right and a wrong way to go about your business that inevitably turns right into wrong. Be patient America; think before you type and you'll see who your allies are. |
