HOW LEGAL ADVOCATES, ADVOCATES, AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
SHELTERS CAN ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF BATTERED WOMEN WHO
HAVE COMPANION ANIMALS

WANT TO BE AN ADVOCATE?? HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO......

SPREAD THE WORD:
A legal advocate, an attorney, can and should, when filing for protection orders, include the family pet, and be argued that their clients be able to take or retrieve their pets.

Legal advocates and Attorneys can also help a women find permanent housing by giving them tips and making use of the laws even where "no pet policies" make housing with their pets almost impossible. Note: Landlords of private owned properties are more flexible about family pets, than larger apt. complexes.

Make use of laws that protect adults and children with disabilities from being separated from their family pets.

Advocates, and attorneys, can assist by utilizing Federal, State, and/or Local laws that protect the rights of disabled people to live with their support animal.

Help get letters of recommendations for the victims from previous neighbors, social workers, former lanlords, and the pets veterinarians.
