Nicholson on crying in Five Easy Pieces
" Rafelson was now nakedly saying to me, " Hey I want you to cry in this movie ". Now thats one thing , as an actor  never say you always go for emotion- or one doesn't sayif they work the way I do. And this is the last kind of direction you want to hear. But everything is not acting class. This is the professional game "
My  Review
Running Time: 96 Minutes
Have you ever wondered what it is like to see Jack Nicholson play a character that is restraint in appearence but an emotional wreck inside.

In  1970  Bob Rafelson's Five easy Pieces hit the cinema screens where it has won a place in alot of cinema goers hearts. Jack Nicholson plays Robert " Bobby" Dupea who is a wanderer with an extraordinary gift for music and a wealthy family to go along with it. Both of which he disregards to great lenghts which is obvious from his lifestyle. His treatment of women leaves an awful lot to be desired and this is brought through the storyline in the shape of Raynette (Karen Black) Dupea's long suffering girlfriend. She is a dizzy waitress who wants to be a singer, but there is also the added factor she is carring his child.  When Dupea hears of this he decides to leave but it transpires his estranged father has had a stroke and is  very ill.  So with Raynette in tow Dupea heads back to his home.  During this time he is reminded as to why he left there in the first place.

The Plot
(L-R)  Karen Black & Jack Nicholson
Bobby Dupea is a restless wanderer who has very little restraint in his approach to womanisng and treating his girlfriend Raynette with respect. He works in a dead end job & his friend has just been arrested for skipping bail. When he hears his father has had a stroke on the advice from his sister he makes the journey to the family home to see his sick father with whom he has not spoken to in years. With his pregnant girlfriend Raynette in tow he sets of on a journey of self discovery. Whilst at his home stead his is steadily reminded as to why he left this home.
This film is a fine film and was a wise choice on Nicholson's behalf on playing the role Bobby Dupea. It does stretch Nicholsons acting talents and it is a great to see such a restraint performance from the man himself.

The supporting  cast are terrific also but in particular Karen Black as the long suffering girlfriend is exceptional and threathens  to  steal  the  show.
