January-February 2006 Challenges
I plan to update the front page sometime in February. In that spirit, here are the challenges for from now until then. All four are for both months, so there's no worry about which apply to Feb and which to Jan. You may submit the links or fics whenever their completed to [email protected].
You might want to brush up on your favorite classic lit this winter, since one of the March challenges will involve it.

The Nursery Files & Erin Blair's Emily Challenge They say great minds think alike, and this time Erin Blair came up with a challenge very similar to one I'd planned for March. So we decided to combine the two and present to you a new challenge sooner than I'd planned. Your challenge is to write about Emily being alive, but set after her "death" on the X-Files. We have faith you'll come up with a good way to explain how she's not dead. (perhaps starting with the coffin full of sand, for example.) This time, she'll have a second chance at having a good life. Challenge Elements: - Set the bulk of your fic after season seven. Your story can begin any time during seasons 7-9, or be entirely post-series. - Make it shippy. Mulder and Scully's relationship "officially" began during season seven, so please keep that in mind. - Have Emily returned to Scully and/or Mulder. How is up to you. - Emily is Mulder's biological child, too. How do they find out? (this can come before or after the previous element) - William must be included in your fic, so please end it no sooner than at his babyhood. - You fic can have some angst, but there should be happiness in there too. - Not required, but Emily and William can have other siblings if you like, either other children gotten in the "normal" fashion like William, or other human-alien hybrids like Emily. |

Foundlings have been a favorite subject for authors for centuries. Let's give this old saw an x-files twist. Requirements:
Either - Send a character out somewhere in public where lots of people come and go without there being much attention paid to their movement. Examples: a store, bus or train station/airport, fair, concert etc. - Have that character be asked by a stranger to watch a baby or small child (five years old or younger), or small children, for "just a few minutes." Or - Someone discovers an infant or toddler on their doorstep. With a note asking for the character take care of their child for "just a little while." - A day or more passes and the parent doesn't return. Now what? Does the parent ever return? If not, what happens to the child? |

Many people object to Scully having given William to strangers to keep him safe; the theory being he'd be safer with people who knew the truth. So let's rewrite the episode so it has a more palatable storyline. Requirements: - Begin your story part way through "William", before Scully gives William up. (explain away or completely ignore the opening scene to the episode) - Instead of giving the baby to strangers, have another character take William. Any character, minor or major. (even a dead one if you can explain why they were incorrectly presumed dead.) - Some event reunites mother and child. What event? Is it just a visit, or is William returned for good? |

Scully promised Gibson that she'd call his parents in The End so he could go home. We know from The Beginning and later episodes that he never made it home. Let's give the poor boy a home! Requirements: - Set your fic at one of three spots A. after The BeginningB. after Without C. after The Truth Obviously, if you pick a or b your story will be AU, and if you pick C it will be post-series - Have someone (either an X-Files agent, Skinner, Maggie, Krycek, or the gunmen) officially or unofficially adopt Gibson and give him a home. - Adjusting to a new home isn't easy for anyone involved. Tell us about (at least) one of the bumps in the road. Special Note for option C: In "The Beginning" Gibson is called a twelve-year-old boy. And in "Within" & "Without" he's also refered to as a twelve-year-old boy. If you set a fic after The Truth, you can say he's 16 or 13 as it suits you, given both ages are more or less canon even though they contradict one another.

This challenge is in response to another hard to fill request - fics with five or more kids. Fics with 3-4 kids are plentiful but more than that are scarce. Requirements: - Set two characters up in domestic bliss. Traditional pairings like Mulder and Scully or Doggett and Reyes, slash pairings, or less common pairings like Scully and Doggett or Mulder and Reyes are all acceptable. - Give them at least five kids, either biological or adopted (or more Emily-type kids), to raise. If adopted they can be kids from episodes, if you like, or original characters. - Make one of the kids very young, two or younger. The other kids can be any age you like through mid-teens. - To the parents' displeasure, the kids become involved with a case, official or otherwise. How involved? What case? - Special note to those who took part in past challenges (particularly the Merry Multiples Challenge): you may write a sequel to your older challenge fic for this challenge, as long as you add enough kids to get five =)
