Entry for January 14, 2007 - Putting That English Degree to Good Use
Maybe you remember me lamenting that my friend Christine has defected to Paris to teach English. If not, it's only important to know that she's someone I became friends with after supervising at work. Apparently things in Paris aren't all that she hoped, unfortunately. So, she asked me to write her a recommendation for a grad school program at Tuffs university. I'm just kidding about putting my degree to use since I use it every day at work, but it's interesting to have that be an appeal for picking someone to write something for you. Cool beans! I'd love it if she'd go to school in Boston. Of course I agreed to do it, and I was particularly motivated to do a decent job. Being me, the first thing I did was to seek advice on my favorite message board and look for examples on google. I forget what sort of learning it is to learn by studying models and examples, but it makes me feel better to have something to look at. Hopefully I did a good job. (obviously I gave more care to grammar and spelling than I do my oh-so-casual blog here) She's a smart kid and I'm sure that she's got what it takes to do well in grad school, so I hope the admissions office does as well. We'll have to wait and see what happens with her application, but I'm rooting for her. 2007-01-15 04:31:22 GMT
