Entry for November 7, 2006- RMOTW: Everyone's White!

Okay, I blew the whole weekly thing out of the gate. But anyway, here's another pointless Random Memory Of The Week while I have time to blog.

Circa August 30th, 1987

For some insane reason, the kids in New Hampshire are going back to school the week before Labor Day. Which is totally unfair because all my friends aren't going back to school for days yet.

We moved to Raymond about a week ago, so there are still boxes every place, which made getting ready for the first day of fifth grade difficult. Eventually I get out of the house and walk next door to wait for the bus. I'm shy, since I only just met the boy and girl who live there. Chris and Tara. I'm also nervous about taking the bus to school since I never have before. You think a city-kid would be used to buses, but the only times I was ever on a school bus before were for fieldtrips.

Eventually we arrive at school and I go to my classroom. Chris isn't in my class, which makes me more nervous. I go in and sit down. And then it hits me: every one of my classmates is white. Every. Single. One.

That's totally amazing. I've never been in a class before where at least a quarter of the kids weren't black or hispanic. It just seems so... homogonous.

At recess I still don't see any minority kids. Or in the entire town, even.  It's a strange thing to get used to.

And that's pretty much how it continued for the next eight years. I could count the number of non-white students on my hands with fingers left over.
