The development of a Spanish language theatre program has long been a dream of the Miracle, which created the bilingual touring company, Teatro Milagro, in 1988. Since the early nineties, Miracle has developed many Spanish language productions, primarily on topics regarding health education for targeted audiences. In 1993, Miracle also presented New York's Repertorio Español for a single evening of Dolores Prida's Botanica. This was a well- received, highly successful event that suggested Spanish language theatre could be presented, on a limited scale, in Portland. At that time, however, there was not enough public support to sustain a full program in Spanish over the long term. Over the past few years, the climate has changed considerably. More and more patrons have requested productions in Spanish and more Latin-American professional theatre artists have knocked on Miracle's door, seeking an opportunity to collaborate and create works revealing the rich aesthetic of their heritage. With the productions of Te Llevo en la Sangre (2002), La Barca Sin Pescador (2003), Fuente Ovejuna (2004), Jardin de Sueños (2005), Ardiente Paciencia (2006), and Rosalba y los Llaveros (2007) the opportunity to fulfill the organization's dream became realized. As Portland's first and only Spanish repertory theatre ensemble, Teatro Español plays a valuable role in the cultural life of our community, providing an artistic forum for Spanish speaking artists and distinctively lively entertainment for our public.
