When you first get in touch wit your local group, I feel it is important that you get a list of the meetings and local activites going on in your area. Going to a few of these classes will help you feel more like you know what you are doing when you get to your first event.
An example of a meeting is your groups buisness meeting. Now I will warn you, these meeting can be very very boring but have an upside. While the group is bickering over event choices and electing officers, you will be able to get a feel as to who people are and how they interact, but please remember every group has an off night every now and again. At the buisness meeting you will be able to meet most if not all of the officers and find out about all the group offers in events and local activites. Some of these offerings might include: Fighter practice, armor making, heraldry night, embordery night, garb workshops, cooking classes, persona workshops etc.
In some areas there are regular classes taught on a number of things, in my area I am currently taking dancing and recorder lessons. Most if not all groups have what are called Collegiums or Universities. These events are usually big deals, with sometimes dozens of classes on every imaginable subject offered. These classes can range from history classes to hands on leatherworking classes.
