The Beaver
Canada's National
Animal
Back to The Canadian Collection
The beaver is the largest rodent in North America.  An adult can reach about 16kg (35lb) and 76cm (3-4ft) long.  It's hind feet are webbed to aid in swimming.  He has two types of hair, long tough hair (guard hairs) and growing through it is shorter softer layer which helps to insulate the animal in cold or wet weather.  Two incisors in each jaw continuously grow as they are worn away.  The beaver is a monogamous animal and will only choose another mate if the other dies.
