The Race-Napping
Halloween, 2001. Give or take a few days. Muffins and Blush were growing restless. So naturally, they did what *any* evil genius news girl would do. It was just more fun this time, because of the holiday!
*scene opens on a large Halloween bash, newsboys and news girls fill the room having a grand ol'e time* *pan to Race who is leaning against the wall talking to Snipeshooter* "Dat's my cigar!" Race exclaims. "Ah, you'll steal another." Snipeshooter says with a grin. Race grins back and then punches Snipeshooter in the gut, retrieving his cigar from Snipes' slack mouth, "No really, dat's my cigar!" Race snickers at his cleverness and then walks off to join a group of newsies in the middle of the room, little does he know that he is being watched by two pairs of curious eyes from the other corner of the room. Blush gets an evil smile on her face, revealing her false vampire fangs, while Muffins nervously plays with the whiskers of her kitty mask. "Are you sure we should be doing this?" Muffins asks Blush, uncertainty filling her voice. "Of course I'm sure! Look at them all. They think nothing bad could possibly happen at a Halloween party. They think I've lost my nerve, because of the last time. But that was personal. This is just... evil." Muffins' face brightens, "Oh EVIL!!!!!! I get it!" she grins and claps her hands. "How fun! When do we get to start?" Blush looks hard at Race, "Soon...Very soon..." *maniacal laugher ensues* Race turns his head quickly, suddenly nervous. He could have sworn that he'd heard evil laughter coming from the corner. "Did you hear that guys?" he asks the group around him. "Hear what?" Blink grins at him, "I didn't hear anything. Are you ok?" he asks, looking at Race's pale face with concern. "Yah, yah, I'm all right. Just this whole Halloween thing, it seems to have gotten to me." Race laughs half-heartedly. Blink looks at him worriedly, but decides to let it go. *meanwhile, back in a dark and evil corner of the room, dastardly plots are being formed* "And then we hit him with a block of gouda cheese!" Blush says with a gleam in her eyes. Muffins looks confused, yet again, "Now, why are we doing this?" "Because it's EVIL!!!!" Blush declares triumphantly "Oh yah! Now I remember!" Muffins begins to laugh maniacally again and Blush joins in. Race jumps, "There it is again!" he searches frantically around the crowd trying to find the source of the laughter. He's surrounded by all the typical Halloween ghouls and goblins. There's the occasional `odd' costume. Spot Conlon borrowed one of Medda's dresses, and is now wearing it, whilst speaking to Jack, who is dressed as a cowboy (how creative is that?). Between these two friends, Race sees just a glimpse of a vampire's smile, and then it quickly disappears. He feels a tap on his shoulder, and lets out a frightened shout while spinning around. To his relief, he only sees a pink, glittery Bug dressed in a ballerina's tutu. "I... um... was just going to ask you to dance, Race. But you look more like you need to sit down." Race started panicking all over again. "...Can't sit down! They'll get me! I have to keep moving!" Mush and Coneflower were dancing a little bit away, Cone dressed as an angel and Mush as the devil. They couldn't help but overhear Race, glanced at each other, and silently decided to approach their friend. "Racetrack," Cone said quietly as she took his arm, "here, let me help you over to the couch." Race tried to resist, but Mush put his arm around Race's shoulder, which made him feel a little calmer. I'm being crazy! Race thought. I'm surrounded by friends. None of them hear the laughter, so why do I keep letting it scare... "MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!" Race jumped at least three feet in the air, landing painfully on his backside. Looking frantically around him, he could have sworn he saw a cat tail! Sweat poured down his face. The whole room had gone quiet and was staring at him. "DON'T TELL ME YOU DIDN'T HEAR IT THAT TIME!! THEY'RE AFTER ME! THEY'RE AFTER MEEEEEEE!!!!!!" He jumped up and shoved his way past a number of people until he found himself outside. All was quiet. Race gulped in the crisp, Autumn air, and told himself to relax. He could feel his heart returning to a normal speed. Why in the world would he be afraid of a little laughter? Wasn't that what this party was for? Laughs? Deciding that the best way to maintain his manly image would be to return to the party and pretend like the whole thing was a joke on his friends, he smiled and turned around. But the smile quickly faded when he heard the evil laughter again. It was above him, to his left, his right, in front of him! He turned in circles, trying to pinpoint it, but it was everywhere! "Race, Race, Race," a soft voice `tsk-ed' in his ear, as a second voice giggled. He stood, paralyzed with fear. "Don't you know how dangerous it is to be alone after sunset in this city?" The voice gave an evil type of chuckle, and then the giggling voice realized how un-evil her giggle was, and joined in the chuckling. Together, their chuckles grew more and more like the insane maniacal laughter that he knew could only belong to the most insane newsgirls around. After wetting himself, he forced his legs to move and ran back into the party. As the doors burst open, all the newsies turned to see what the commotion was about. A pale Racetrack stood in the doorway, looking very frightened and slightly soiled. But he didn't seem to mind, as he shouted to them, "I know who's after me! I know who it is! It's the infamous duo..." Before he could clue everyone else in, every candle in the room died out. It was as if two geniuses were behind this mastermind plan! Everyone was murmuring their agreement to this, when the candles suddenly relit themselves! But when they looked back to Racetrack to hear him finish his statement, all they saw was the open door, leading out to the pitch-black night. Sorrow and Ali ran to where Race had been standing. There were no footprints, no crumbs, no lingering scent of perfume. Well, there was a bit of a soiled smell in the air, but... Everyone looked around in a state of confusion. Where was Racetrack? "I've got a better question for you," Cone said in answer to the group's silent question. "Where are Muffins and Blush?" Dun dun DUN!!
