Mean Doctors....

"I will transfer you to this hospital if you agree to have your colon cut out, and no pain medication"

I'm not sure when this happened, I think sometime back in march of 2002. I was in Greenville UPMC hospital. My regular doctor had admitted me 2 days before that because I was dehydrated, sick, and having alot of pain. All of a sudden, on the 3rd day I started throwing up, I was just throwing up every 15 minutes or so, bile. My nurse paged my regular doctor and told him what was going on. Then he called my GI doctors office, and spoke with the receptionist and told her it was an emergency and that he needed to speak with my GI doctor right away. My regular doctor waited for over 2 hours, and my GI doctor didn't call back, so he had him paged again, with the emergency thing on the page. Finally, he called back. My regular doctor stressed to my GI doctor how sick I was, and that he thought it would be best if I was transferred to Allegheny General Hospital where they could give me better care and do the neccesary tests on me to find out what was wrong. My GI doctor said that he wouldn't accept me for transfer just for pain control. My regular doctor told him again how I was throwing up, and how I got sick all of a sudden, and that it wasn't for pain control. My GI doctor came back with saying he would accept me for a transfer if I agreed to have my Colon cut out and no pain medication what so ever...Well, this is what my regular doctor said my GI doctor said to him..."I will transfer her to this hospital if she agree's to have her colon cut out, and no pain medication".

When my regular doctor came back into my room and told me all this I was shocked literally, and so was he. He said that in all the years he's called other doctors to have patients transferred this was the first time another doctor made standards I would have to go by if I wanted to be transferred. I mean, he should have accepted my transfer. I was really very sick, and my regular doctor didn't know what was wrong with me. The hospital that I was currently in didn't really have the equipment neccesary to do tests to see what was wrong with me, and it's not that big of a hospital. Anyways, I ended up NOT getting transferred. I was in that hospital for a few more days, and then I got sent home.

About 2 weeks later I had an appointment to see my GI doctor for a follow-up, and I asked him about what happened when I wanted to be transferred because I was throwing up so bad and got sick real quick like that while I was in UPMC in Greenville under the care of my Regular Doctor. Of course his story was totally different than from my regular doctor's story of what was said over the phone between the two of them. My GI doctor said that he told my regular doctor he would accept my transfer to Allegheny General, or UPMC in Pittsburgh for a second opinion, and that I really needed to think about having my colon cut out. He didn't say that he made any guide-lines for having me transferred. I know that he did, because he likes for his patients to just do what he says needs to be done, and thats it. Me, on the other hand, I like to try all other medical options before going in and doing a senseless act that can't be reversed, like cutting out someones colon. Now, if I was really very sick because of my diseased colon I could understand, but as long as I am doing okay with it, why cut it out? I know that my quality of life would be better if it was gone, but what if it would get better and heal up? If they cut it out I will never know if it would have gotten better on its own. Anyway, my GI doctor denied ever saying that he would only accept my transfer as long as I agreed to have my colon cut out, and no pain medication.
