MUEN: FIRST OFF, I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT I'M A BIG FAN OF YOUR MUSIC. I'VE SEEN YOU PLAY A COUPLE OF TIMES AND BOTH SHOWS WERE AWESOME! THE BAND SEEMS TO HAVE THAT BROTHERHOOD THAT COMES FROM PLAYING AND PRACTICING TOGETHER FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. HOW LONG HAS THE BAND BEEN TOGETHER AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN EACH OTHER?
Antonius: I've known Harlis and Joe for about 8 months now.
Harlis: Thanx!.. there were a couple members on bass and drums before Joe and Antonius. But I knew right from the start when I met Joe 4 years ago, I wanted him on drums. As he says, "we locked eyes like two dogs ready to fight." when we first met, we were at a show. His band wanted to go on first and I didnt wanna give up the slot. But he had just busted his mouth in a drunken skateboarding accident and had teeth missing and dry blood all over his lips and stitches. So I said "alright man go ahead." he told me " Dude, I just wanted to get my set over with so I can go home" -as he was in so much pain. When my band finally went on and I saw him out there drinkin beer and havin a ball, I was pissed. But there was no denying he was a killer drummer. toothless, stitched up and all and we been homies ever since.
MUEN: WHO WRITES THE MUSIC AND LYRICS FOR YOUR SONGS? WHERE DO YOU GET SOME OF THE IDEAS FOR THE LYRICS? WHAT HAS BEEN THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR MUSIC?
Joe: I write a few songs that we do with the band....only a few are worthy for thrill d though. Such as Blue, Misery and Prison is Freedom. Prison is freedom is the only one I've written so far that is available for listening.
Antonius: Most of the songs I've played with THRILL DELUXE were already written prior to me becoming a member but our next album seems like it will be a conglomeration of the songs of each member.
Harlis: I write a lot. and Joe writes too. Some we've written together. We know Antonius has some songs for us as well. For me, my inspiration has come from my experiences. Although There are times when I like to look at a photograph or picture and vibe off it and come up with shit. I'll look at a magazine cover or newpaper and see how many phrases or words from it I can incorporate into a song. Man, I'll tell ya sometimes songs come so fast and complete it's like they were already written and I just threw up an antenna and grab 'em. other times I'll just start writting a song without stopping and when I get to the end I have to re-read it just to see what it is I have written.
MUEN: DO YOU HAVE A FULL LENGTH ALBUM OUT? WHAT IS IT CALLED? WHERE CAN PEOPLE PURCHASE THE MUSIC?
Antonius: Ask Harlis!
Harlis: Our Current album is simply titled THRILL DELUXE. But we're writting new stuff now and have a few demos we recorded last year. We intended to put 'em out as an E.P. but decided to wait and add them to a full length when we are ready. The current one is available on myspace. find it on our home page and click!
MUEN: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSIC SCENE IN ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA?
Antonius: OC seems to be saturated with emo, screamo and a lot of shaggy haired skinny rockers who sound like they cry a lot when they sing...then again, I'd cry too if my image was based on tight girl pants and hair covering my eyes.
Harlis: ya know theres a lotta good punk bands as always in O.C. but Ive always thought there was a diverse music scene here too. Blues, Reggae.. theres some cool shit there, ya just have to go look for it!
Joe: everyone and their mother is in a band.
O.C. frustrates me in that way.
MUEN: ALL OF YOU ARE AMAZING MUSICIANS.
HARLIS, I WAS AT ONE OF YOUR SHOWS AND A WOMAN TOLD ME THAT
YOU HAVE BEEN PLAYING GUITAR SINCE YOU WERE 6.
IS THAT TRUE? HAVE ALL OF YOU BEEN PLAYING SINCE AN EARLY AGE?
Harlis: Yeah I actually started at the age of 7.
Antonius: I've been a musician since my grandmother sang me my first note of "You are my Sunshine" when I was 4 or 5. Then came piano, guitar, singing and everything else.
Joe: I began playing drums at age 5. I have been playing ever since. I'll be 19 in October hahaha!
MUEN: ARE ANY OF YOU INVOLVED WITH OTHER BANDS OR PROJECTS?
Harlis: I jam with friends in a band called THE BASTARD WINOS. It's a chance to play more for fun and get together with some other homies once in awhile. the music is blues and soul based. Our motto is Women , Booze, Damnation!
Antonius: I was in a band before THRILL D called HOPLITE. We are actually still together. I enjoy it because it's a totally different style and I don't feel limited in my style of music. I love surf, reggae and funk as well (we do it all in that band) and that's were HOPLITE fills my musical void. Whatever I can't do with THRILL DELUXE I can surely do with HOPLITE.
MUEN: WHAT KIND OF PUBLICITY HAVE YOU HAD SO FAR IN THE WAY OF RADIO PLAY, REVIEWS OR INTERVIEWS?
Antonius: Ask Harlis!
Harlis: we've been tryin for years to get on the cover of MAD MAGAZINE! ....havent made it yet...but we will!... the publicity we have had has thankfully, been very positive. But I must say, never have we had the request to do a completely nude interview tilll now! It was interesting you suggested it. We may appear nervous but trust me, we're very excited!
MUEN: OTHER THAN ME :), WHO ARE YOU GUYS BIG FANS OF? MUSICALLY OF COURSE.
Joe: at the moment I am very into bands like Coldplay, GooGoo Dolls,
John Mayer, Lifehouse, pretty much anything acoustic with feeling and a groove.
Oh and that new Nellie Furtado song is absolutely amazing!!
I love good melodies but don't get me wrong, I still love the hard stuff.
Antonius: SUBLIME, 311, THE BEACH BOYS, ERIC CLAPTON, STONED TEMPLE PILOTS, AUDIOSLAVE to name a few.
Harlis: there are too many to name really. but if I had to narrow it down I would have to say my all time favorite singer is Otis Redding. I love Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson...Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash, Earth, Wind & Fire, Rick James, Kool & the Gang, P-Funk, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Skynyrd, the beach boys...I could go on and on...but thats the top of 'em.
MUEN: WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SHOW AND WHY? WHAT BANDS HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED PLAYING WITH?
Harlis: Ya Know there have been a lot. House of Blues, Our event we put on called DAMNED TO SUBURBIA was a lotta fun. Any and all the shows where there's a shit load of drunk people yelling and having fun while we played is cool with me! As far as bands I liked playin with I would have to say our homies Con Job and Switchback, Skatanik Rednecks
Antonius: The Gallaghers show we had a few months ago because it was the only show I actually broke into a dripping sweat.
MUEN: ALOT OF BANDS DESIGNATE ONE PERSON TO MANAGE. WHICH ONE MANAGES THE BAND OR DO YOU SHARE THE RESPONSIBILTY?
Antonius: Harlis is the Mastermind behind THRILL D no question.
MUEN: ON A MORE PERSONAL NOTE, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOUR FANS OR ANY COMMENTS YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE? TELL US ABOUT YOUR HOPES, DREAMS, AND GOALS FOR THE BAND.
Harlis: We love our fans!!!! they are very much appreciated . they are quite dedicated and loyal and they all fuckin ROCK! Goals and hopes ? ...to grow musically and continue to have fun and play the music we want to.
MUEN: THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE INTERVIEW. WE AT MUEN WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN FOR YOU.
Harlis: Thank YOU!...um...may we put our clothes back on now? Interview by Shauna O'Donnell |
