INTERVIEW WITH THE MERCY KILLS
(Melbourne, Australia)
Formed in late 2004, the band released their first independent EP in 2006. In July 2007 THE MERCY KILLS' song 'NEED IT' was added as track No 1 to RIOT ON SUNSET Vol 4 from 272 Records in Los Angeles and is receiving constant airplay. So THE MERCY KILLS... a name you should keep in mind!
Interview by Angel Devil (Italy) (MUEN Magazine)
MUEN: HI guys! Do you want to introduce your band to the MUEN Magazine's readers?
Hey AngelDevil, yeah wed love to say Hi. THE MERCY KILLS are Mark (guitar/vocals) Jennifer (bass/vocals) Scottie (drums/vocals).
MUEN: Why this name: THE MERCY KILLS?
Our name, THE MERCY KILLS came from a friends comment. She said that sometimes mercy kills, and we liked the way it sounded. It can be a collective, as in "we are THE MERCY KILLS" or taken as a phrase. The words "kills" and "mercy" make an interesting contrast.
MUEN: Lets talk about your last album "Suburban Threat" with the band THE JOYSTIX. This album is out with four of your songs. So, what kind of responses did you get from people and the media with this release?
The Album Suburban Threat was an opportunity to join Hungarian band THE JOYSTIX on a release from the Los Angeles label 272 Records. 272 asked us if they could use some tracks from our first E.P Mercy Killers. Weve had such a great response from fans, radio and magazines, especially online with platforms such as myspace. Weve had requests from club D.Js to send copies for them to play/mix, which is pretty cool.
MUEN: Will we see a new CD soon? Are you working on new material?
Were always writing new material and have just finished our second E.P and shot a video. The video is for the song Your Type which Jennifer sings and is on our myspace page along with another two new tracks, Alone and Dead In You.
MUEN: How was it working with 272 Records?
Its been a pleasure working with 272 Records. They have a great team, promote well and the end result is always high quality. We look forward to meeting up with them in the U.S.
MUEN: How would you define your sound and what are your main sources of inspiration?
THE MERCY KILLS are driving raw rock/punk/pop with a triple vocal attack. We like to combine a simple vocal melody with thick heavy guitar, dirty bass and solid drums. Were inspired by the music we love and the amazing people we work with, or want to work with in the future. Playing live is always such an inspiration, its such an awesome energy when the three of us are on stage together kicking it out.
MUEN: As a band, who are your biggest influences?
There are so many influences between the three of us. Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Birthday Party, Dead Kennedys, Nirvana, The Cars, Generation X, The Pixies, The Church, just to name a few.
MUEN: What "messages" do you try and get across in your lyrics?
The message is whatever the listener wants it to be. You could say we write about fears, dreams and wishes. Its important for us to have an honesty in the songwriting and at the same time leave the lyrics open to interpretation.
MUEN: What expectations do you have for the future?
There will be more recording over the next few months and a new video to shoot. Were planning to travel overseas to play in the new year, hopefully Europe and the U.S.
MUEN: How important is "the look" for you?
THE MERCY KILLS do have a certain look. Bands that look like each member being from the same gang will always have an impact, so I guess that is a consideration for us. Its more about us enjoying a common aesthetic.
MUEN: How's the scene in Melbourne (Australia)? Are there a lot of clubs? A lot of people coming out?
The live music scene in Melbourne is healthy because of the large number of venues. Its always been a RocknRoll town but now there are so many different styles of music coming out of the pubs and clubs. Radio stations such as 3RRR and 3PBS are very supportive and survive by subscription. On any night of the week there will be dozens of venues providing great original live music.
MUEN: Do you think internet is an effective tool for letting people know of your band?
Yes, the internet is our strongest promotional tool. We used to let people know about a show or a release only through radio and street press. Now, sites such as myspace are so useful in widening the fanbase. We still use radio and street press for local promotion but the internet really allows us to get THE MERCY KILLS out and into the bigger picture. 272 Records found us through myspace, which has led to a release through amazon.com and of course the sensational MUEN magazine also stumbled across us online.
MUEN: Thanks guys! Anything else you'd like to say to your fans and supporters?
THE MERCY KILLS would like to thank anyone who has checked us out and enjoyed our music. Please visit us online www.myspace.com/themercykills We hope to play in your neck of the woods in the not too distant future.
MUEN: Cool, guys, we're done. Thanks so much for your availability.
Thank you AngelDevil, YOU ROCK!!! |
