INTERVIEW with SISTER MADNESS (Dominican Republic)

MUEN: SISTER MADNESS, I LIKE YOUR SONG "ALICE".. WHAT IS THE LATEST WITH THE BAND?
SISTER MADNESS: Well right now we are in the writing process of our first album, and we're expecting to release in the first quarter of 2008. Besides that we are playing local gigs and proyecting ourselves internationally, via internet and preforming outside of the country as we did participating in the Indie Week Toronto Festival.
MUEN: THERE'S THAT WORD AGAIN, "PROYECT" WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? ARE YOU GUYS MARXISTS OR SOMETHING?
SISTER MADNESS: Not at all!
MUEN: WHAT DOES "PROYECT" MEAN?
SISTER MADNESS: We mean proyect as proyection, getting our music out of the country is hard since we have no support at all from music industries or media. Here in the Dominican Republic rock is not even near mainstream so we have to do it all by ourselves. Proyecting our music out of the country is a way to say that we're doing everything we can do to make it, out of the DR.
MUEN: WE INTERVIEWED A BAND FROM THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC CALLED "DARKMIRACLE" LAST YEAR .. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THIS BAND?
SISTER MADNESS: Yes, they are well known in the local scene and some of our members past band shared the stage with them.
MUEN: WHY ARE YOU CALLING YOURSELVES "SISTER MADNESS?" WHAT WAS THE REASON FOR THAT?
SISTER MADNESS: Sister Madness is what we have and don't portray in our regular lives. It is that madness that was born within ourselves, but was never attended to and... now we show it to the world through our music.
MUEN: WHO USUALLY WRITES THE LYRICS FOR THE SONGS, AND TELL US ABOUT "ALICE," I LOVE THAT SONG! WHAT INSPIRED THE WRITING FOR THAT?
SISTER MADNESS: We all write lyrics, but most usually it's Bushee, Mickey and Me (Albi) who writes the most of the lyrics, although Shari and Danny always bring something to the table for all the lyrics. As for "Alice" that's my baby, that was the first song i wrote and it was written in the hardest part of my life. It was inspired by all the problems that sorrounded me in that exact moment when i wrote it, I was ill, my father got lost in the open sea, my girlfriend dumped me and all of that stuff came toguether like in one week so, that was like my channel to let it all out.
MUEN: SO WHERE EXACTLY ARE YOU RECORDING THE ALBUM, HOW MANY SONGS WILL THERE BE, AND WILL YOU BE UPLOADING ANY MORE SONGS TO YOUR MYSPACE ANYTIME SOON?
SISTER MADNESS: We're recording the album here in DR with one of the most talented producer and musician of the Dominican Republic Ariel Nux (Bassist and producer for the band NUX).There will be 10 songs in the album that are all of our creation. As for the uploading, we will upload some of the new songs as soon as the album is recorded.
MUEN: ARE ANY OF YOU BROTHERS? WHERE DID YOU ALL MEET, DID IT TAKE A LONG TIME TO FINALLY GET THE RIGHT MUSICIANS TOGETHER, OR DID IT ALL JUST SORT OF FALL INTO PLACE?
SISTER MADNESS: Well Bushee, Mickey and Shari are friends from school, Danny is close friends with Mickey since they were kids and I'm a great friend of Shari for about 4 years now. It took a little while to have a drummer that had chemistry with the band but that totally changed when Danny became a part of the band.
MUEN: WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING A BAND IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC?
SISTER MADNESS: Sincerlly man... ALMOST NOTHING. Rock & Roll is not something Dominicans really like. Being succesfull here is like being a low profile band in the US. It's sad, but it's true.
MUEN: WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT FOR YOU?
SISTER MADNESS: Hahahahahaha, rehersing on time.
MUEN: WHAT IS THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE BAND?
SISTER MADNESS: Between 22 and 24, We're kids!!!
MUEN: SO WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2008?
SISTER MADNESS: Have the Album ready and play live as much as we can. And get ready to depart in 2009 to Toronto.Interview by G. Cataline
