SHINY TOY GUNS

SHINY TOY GUNS

Jeremy Dawson
By RL Segarra

Hello little boys, little toys, We're the dreams you're believing, Crawling up the walls, Running down your face, Razor sharp, razor clean, Feel the weapon's sensation, On your back... With loaded guns………..

The lyrics above, as every fan knows is from the song "le Disko" by Shiny Toy Guns. The band is Jeremy Dawson, Chad Petree, Carah Faye and Mikey Martin - In the middle of their tour Jeremy Dawson took the time to talk with MUEN Magazine about the band their music, fans and touring.

MUEN: The first question I have for you guys is where did the name "Shiny Toy Guns" come from?

JEREMY DAWSON: The name of the band comes from the lyrics of the song "When They Came For Us." The song and the name of the band reflect a story about how large organizations like religion, government and military, corporations, etc. take an exciting and unique object or a task and ask someone who is younger and a bit naive to go and deliver the object and complete the task. In the process of this however this individual has no idea how dangerous the situation is and ends up hurting themselves and people around them … hence, a shiny toy gun.

MUEN: With roots coming from Oklahoma and England, what brought all of you together?

JEREMY DAWSON: We were brought together by complete chance, outside of Chad and I, who have been writing together our entire lives. This band is here to try to help fill out music with different shades of colors, and to try to open doors for others to do the same.

MUEN: Your music when I listen to it, is electronica.... techno... then I'm brought back in time to 80"s disco... then when I think I've got it pegged, I'm shot back out towards some futuristic world - How would you describe your music, and what are your influences?

JEREMY DAWSON: We are a future forward rock band. Influenced musically by artists from Pink Floyd to Jesus Jones, from Peter Gabriel to Vangelis.

MUEN: Myspace, Myspace, Myspace, the internet in general, there is so much music out there now, the digital generation, how has it helped or hindered in getting your music out there?

JEREMY DAWSON: We use the internet in daily life just like you do. We use it for music, and we use it very effectively. We were literally born in the wires; instead of born out of a certain "scene" or a movement applied to a certain city or region.

MUEN: I have a friend who is pure metal. I have another friend who is so American Idol, Justin Timberlake. Pure pop. Both of these friends, on the same day within a few hours of one another, (and they don't know each other) told me I needed to check out this band, your band , Shiny Toy Guns. You have been on both their players on Myspace. Are you aware of the appeal your music has to such a wide audience?

JEREMY DAWSON: Songwriting is something that we rely on and focus first. Then taking something that is ordinarily a cowboy boot and twisting and coloring it to be perfectly fit for Flava Flav to wear walking down the streets of New York becomes the next task. But it's not just our music or other artists. Half of this is simply your two friends have had open access to much more culture and music now that we are surrounded by the internet and mobile technology. Even though one of your friends might swear by a black axe, he secretly is just a music lover with a taste for metal. 10 years ago he would have not been allowed to listen to anything but metal. The mindset of people is more open, there are more choices and now it's okay to freely explore the music world in detail, wearing eyeliner or not.

MUEN: "We Are Pilots" is a great cd. When can we look forward to more music and another cd?

JEREMY DAWSON: Quietly, we are working on the new album, but also working on the last couple of remix projects we took on - before we dive headfirst into the record.

MUEN: How is the tour going? I'm looking forward to your show in Santa Ana; your not getting tired are you?

JEREMY DAWSON: The tour is going well. We are in Rapid City, South Dakota and its freezing. And today, yes, I am completely exhausted. But this is my job. We just have to wait for the next good day, do the vitamins and Gatorade, and do the job. Trying to wean off of going out... and weaning off of Red Bull are our primary goals at this time, haha.

The Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana was packed with "shiny" people eagerly awaiting the band. And when they took the stage, they tore it up and brought the house down. Shiny Toy Guns is a band that if you have the chance, you definitely need to see them live! The energy, excitement, and sheer power of their presence encompasses the whole venue they're playing in. Check their web sites and myspace for new tour dates that they have added. Then go and be transported. Oh and Jeremy, keep downin the Red Bulls
