OF BROKEN recently made the charts (TOP 50) in the American Idol Underground competition and finished in the TOP 20 out of over 4,000 artists WORLDWIDE! They've shared the stage with bands like Papa Roach (Geffen), Jimmies Chicken Shack (Koch), Cinder Road (EMI), City Sleeps (trustKill), Voodoo Blue (Dcide), Lennex (ft. Phil Ritchie from Rockstar:Supernova) and many other great Baltimore bands, too.
MUEN: CONGRATULATIONS GUYS!! WHY DON'T WE START WITH A LITTLE HISTORY BEHIND THE BAND. I ESPECIALLY WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU CAME UP WITH THE NAME "OF BROKEN.?"
OF BROKEN: Well it came from a poster that hung on my wall back in college (Towson U) with James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey at a diner. Part of the Boulevard of Broken Dreams series. While being nearly sued by a band in Florida called Release (as we were named at the time, too) we changed it to Of Broken by choppin the Boulvard and Dreams part! We figured NO ONE would have the name and we would eventually like it. Luckily, we were right.
MUEN: TELL US WHAT THE MUSIC SCENE IS LIKE IN YOUR AREA...
OF BROKEN: The scene is actually really coming along! I have been in the scene for over a decade and one thing I have noticed is that the fan support from the younger generations are blossoming. Before, the young kids would buy your CD's but now, as parents get cooler, you're seeing them at shows too! you know, in the smaller and dirtier venues where you would NEVER see them before.
MUEN: WHICH ONE OF YOU IS THE SONGWRITER BOTH LYRICALLY AND MUSICALLY? DID YOU HAVE ANY COLLABORATION FROM SOMEONE OUTSIDE OF THE BAND?
OF BROKEN: That would be me lyrically and musically but Tim - guitar - is a bohemoth for writing killer guitar lines. I am the more 'pretty and catchy' style lines on my guitar while Tim says, I dare you to play this line correctly. ;) Lyrically, I write during the songs at practice. It's weird but it works. I kinda sing whatever I'm feeling and by the time the song is written I remember the key lines I kept repeating and fill in the gaps. It wouldn't be uncommon for me to play a new song at a show, and STILL not know what I'm singing!
MUEN: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR EP. HOW MANY SONGS ARE ON IT? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO MAKE?
OF BROKEN: The EP was oringinally for promotional use of the upcoming album Still Frames with the three songs Still Frames, Red Light District and Sometimes Blind, but it took off, and we linked it up to iTunes and numerous other digital distributors. We won't be selling it stores or anything (except CDBaby.com *wink wink*). The EP itself was more or less put together in a few weeks. We needed something to let the world know we were coming and we feel it did it's job. The album, however, will melt your face and leave you crying :)
MUEN: THERE ARE VIDEOS ON YOUR MYSPACE PAGE OF YOU PLAYING LIVE SHOWS. I NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE ALOT OF ENERGY WHEN YOU PLAY AND YOU LOOK LIKE YOU ENJOY BEING ON STAGE. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE FANS KNEW THE WORDS TO YOUR SONGS. HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL WHEN YOU LOOK OUT AND SEE PEOPLE SINGING BACK AT YOU?

OF BROKEN: Looking out and seeing your fans singing along is the best feeling out there. You spend years working on your music and ability to write and catchy rememorable song and you see the proof in the voices shouting along with you. On stage is a whole other world for us and when we get on it, watch out. People who stay after shows are usually shocked at how open and goofy we are after seeing us on stage as quasi-psychopaths! we hug, EVERYONE who meets us, too. Often, it can get UBER awkward but that is just how we like it.
MUEN: THE BAND HAS TOURED UP AND DOWN THE ENTIRE EAST COAST. WHAT WERE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TOUR? WHICH WAS YOUR FAVORITE SHOW? WHAT DID YOU LIKE LEAST ABOUT BEING ON THE ROAD?
OF BROKEN: Highlights? Playing with Papa Roach in Charleston, SC was about the most killer time we have had in our lives so far. The fan support, and being able to chat with greats like Jacoby is mind blowing. Really backs why you worked so hard to get there and the sacrifices you made. The least would be Adams ass. Not sure if that's too graphic but his ass is so that's that. The next tour will be better in the RV as opposed to the van!
MUEN: WHEN DO YOU THINK YOU MIGHT MAKE IT TO THE WEST COAST?
OF BROKEN: This fall hopefully, depending on how quick we get this album done. Not something we want to rush but believe us, we're trying. Case in point, we're comin!
MUEN: YOU HAVE SHARED THE STAGE WITH ALOT OF REALLY GREAT BANDS. HOW DID YOU WIND UP SHARING IT WITH PAPA ROACH? WHAT WAS IT LIKE OPENING UP FOR THEM?
OF BROKEN: HA! You know, Jacoby was a man of little words for us. He spoke more to our manager Chris who managed to corner him during our sound check. hehe The whole experience was incredible. There really is no other way to put it.
MUEN: YOU'RE FANS ARE OBVIOUSLY VERY IMPORTANT TO YOU AND I KNOW YOU TAKE THE TIME TO ANSWER EVERY PIECE OF MAIL. I THINK IT'S GREAT THAT YOU KEEP THE CLOSE CONTACT WITH THEM. OTHER THAN YOUR FANS, WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR SUPPORT FROM?
OF BROKEN: The internet helps ;O) MUEN: DO YOU GET ALOT OF SUPPORT FROM RADIO STATIONS?
OF BROKEN: We are on rotation on about 150 college radio stations right now, but locally we have great support from DC101, 98ROCK and WHFS. Luckily they are THE rck stations for the Delmarva area so we have the homebase pretty covered. We're working on a rotation deal now, but more info on that later...
MUEN: ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO SAY TO YOUR FANS OR ANY COMMENTS YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO SAY TO THE NEW FANS WHO WILL BE CHECKIN OUT YOUR PAGE?
OF BROKEN: I would like to say thank you to ANYONE who listens and enjoys our music and if I could I would give you all millions of dollars for the support. BUT, we're broke right now so a rain check will have to do ;) oh yeah, and loooooovvveeeee yyyyooooouuuuuu...
MUEN: THANK YOU FOR THE INTERVIEW, WE WISH YOU THE VERY BEST OF LUCK! OF BROKEN: Thanks Shauna! We heart you tons. Jason, Tim, Heath and Adam.:Of Broken:.
