INTERVIEW with
ME TALK PRETTY
(New York, NY)

Interview by G. Cataline

MUEN: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST NEWS THAT HAS HAPPENED FOR YOU RECENTLY?

ME TALK PRETTY: Things have been great for us recently, but I would say the biggest NEWS thats has happened recently is the sighting of CBS Anchor Katie Couric at our last Gig! We opened for the all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band, LEZ ZEPPELIN, a couple weeks ago at The Filmore @ Irving Plaza. The show was amazing all around. The next morning we received a text message at 7am from our friends at Popmatters. com saying " WAKE UP, YOU ARE ON PAGE SIX!" Page Six is this huge NYC gossip column that talks about the stars, kinda of a TMZ thing i guess. The article was entitled ROCK CHICK and mentioned that Katie Couric was spotted rocking out to us at our show... pretty random but definately awesome! You can only imagine how a small band feels like when this happens.

MUEN: TELL US ABOUT THE LATEST RECORDING... WHO PRODUCED IT, WHAT IS THE TITLE OF THE ALBUM, AND WHERE IS IT AVAILABLE?

ME TALK PRETTY: Our record, entitle RUBY, was recorded and released last summer independently. We recorded it at Big Blue Meenie Studios in New Jersey with Arun Venkatesh. Arun is an artist's producer, the kind that knows everyones family and produces the music we create from as close to our vision as you can possibly get. He has that gift that kinda scares you becuase he knows what you want before you even finnish a thought. RUBY is an EP, its half of our full length record that we decided to put out in a staggered release to capitalize on different marketing opportunities. I wont bore you with details, but if you really want to read all about that stuff, we sat down with PopMatters. com talking about all that. RUBY is available on our websites (www. myspace. com/MeTalkPretty) and on digital stores like iTunes and Snocap.

MUEN: WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN GOALS AS A BAND? WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH FIRST AND FOREMOST?

ME TALK PRETTY: Our goals are always changing as we open doors and knock down walls. But, we are not going to sing you poetry or be all philosophical about this question; we want to tour, we want to make a lot of great records, and we want to execute those in front of a lot of ears.

MUEN: WE THINK YOU HAVE A PRETTY ORIGINAL SOUND, NOT SIMILAR TOO, BUT WITH THE PASSION OF A BAND LIKE PARAMORE.. OFCOURSE YOUR INFLUENCES SEEM A LITTLE HEAVIER.. SO WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES WITHIN THE BAND?

ME TALK PRETTY: Paramore is great, she definately has a lot of passion in her delivery. We are so happy that female vocalists are starting to get noticed and more respected in the industry. The female voice is so much more dynamic and emotional then a mans voice, it can do so much more and with the type of music that we do its perfect. Collectively we are influenced by bands like MUSE, THE CURE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, and BJORK. But we draw influences from all genres and artists ranging from R&B to Classical to Arabic music to Gypsy Eastern European music!!!!

MUEN: WHEN DID JULIA FIRST START SINGING, AND DOES SHE WRITE THE LYRICS?

ME TALK PRETTY: Julia was a late bloomer. She is a visual artist, a sculptress by education. It wasn't untill she got to College where she started to pursue music in her homeland Romania. It came quickly to her, catapulting her band in Romania to one of the most popular bands in the country. When she came to the States she had the challenge of learning English from scratch. We kinda kicked her ass... LOL Nevertheless she did it quickly and she writes every single word she sings.

MUEN: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO NOTICE MOST ABOUT THE BAND, AND/OR WHAT THE MUSIC STANDS FOR?

ME TALK PRETTY: We all come from pretty different backgrounds and have had different life experiences that fuel our musical direction. But at the end of the day we are a band that takes pride in writing music that we would listen to and enjoy watching it be performed. We dont really try to stay within a genre, instead we just write how we feel and try to capture that in a live setting and on our record. If we were to describe our sound, i'd say dark, but with a lot of hope.

MUEN: WHERE DO YOU PLAY LIVE MOST OFTEN?

ME TALK PRETTY: Home is NYC. We mostly play in the northeast and do a few tours a year that take us as far south as Florida and SO FAR, as far west as Texas. But that will change soon.

MUEN: DO YOU HAVE A TOUR COMING UP, WHEN DO YOU EXPECT TO BE IN CALIFORNIA?

ME TALK PRETTY: There is talks of a summer tour that will take us to the west coast for our first time. Always a good idea to check our myspace page for new shows. We love touring and playing to new people. We love the challenge of winning over people who have never heard of us. Basically, we'll play anywhere and if you don't believe us, just ask us!
