LINDY LAFONTAINE of KYRO (Washington, D.C.)

MUEN: SO LINDY:) WHO ARE YOU PLAYING WITH, DO YOU STILL HAVE THE SAME BANDMATES AS WHEN WE TALKED LAST TIME?
LINDY: I am still playing with the same guys from KYRO. It's still a new band but it's working out famously. There's some serious talent floating around KYRO and I wouldn't be surprised if we dominated the Alternative DC music scene in 2008.
MUEN: WHAT ARE YOU DOING RIGHT NOW TO MARKET YOUR MUSIC, AND WHAT DO YOU HAVE OUT THERE WITH REGARDS TO RECORDINGS? DO YOU HAVE A COMPLETE CD OR EP?
LINDY: At the moment we're working on saving up some cash for the EP. Like I said, it's still a new band so the only recordings we have thus far are home recordings. We are in the process of learning an entire covers set since that's where the money is in the gigging circuit. I suppose that could also be considered a marketing strategy since people will be saying "Damn, that band KYRO does the best version of "Evenflow" we've ever heard."
MUEN: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO A REMAKE OF "LOW?" I LIKE THE WAY YOU DID IT, YOU SORT OF PUT A SENSUAL SPIN ON IT...
LINDY: That's a loaded question. Long story short, my best friend from high school (now my boyfriend) asked me to do it for him, in that sexy way. I was in music college in England at the time and decided to use it as one of my projects. I got a very good grade :)
MUEN: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING PIANO FOR, AND DO YOU WRITE ALL YOUR SONGS ON PIANO?
LINDY: I've played piano since I was 10. I got lessons once from a mean Algerian woman who slapped my hands when I played a wrong note. I only took lessons for about 6 months then carried on playing by ear. Till this day though, I can still play Fur Elise with my eyes closed. I write most of my songs on piano but I do write quite a few on guitar.
MUEN: OBVIOUSLY TORI AMOS IS ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES, WHAT IS IT ABOUT TORI THAT YOU LIKE SO MUCH?
LINDY: I was first introduced to Tori Amos when I was living in Egypt. I believe the first song I heard was Cornflake Girl and I was sold off of "Under the Pink". At first it was the vibe of her music. It suited the angsty teen in me very well. After getting to know her music better, I'd say her lyrics are what I respect most of all. But really it's the whole package. She's incredible. Just ask any musician. They might not get into her but they can't deny her talent.
MUEN: HAVE YOU DONE MANY LIVE SHOWS, AND WHERE AT IN THE DC AREA?
LINDY: I moved to DC from San Francisco a little over a year ago. I have played quite a few shows since I've been here. At first I exhausted the open mic scene, which is what you have to do when you move to a new city. Once I hooked up with KYRO, I'd say we've played at least a three gigs a month. It's really easy to get a good gig out here (if you're good ;)).Interview by G. Cataline |
