Interview with DISONIC

Interview by Shauna O'Donnell
MUEN: BASED IN CHICAGO, DISONIC DELIVERS POWERFUL, HARD-DRIVING RHYTHMS, AND SOULFUL MELODIES THAT DEMONSTRATE THEIR DIVERSE RANGE OF SOUND. ONCE YOU LISTEN TO THEIR DEBUT CD WE ARE SURE YOU WILL AGREE. HI GUYS AND THANKS FOR TALKING WITH MUEN...
DISONIC: Our pleasure.
HOW DID THE MTV2 ON THE RISE VOTING GO?
DISONIC: We didn't win, but we wanna thank everybody who voted. You guys helped us get very close. Unfortunately, we were late comers to the competition, and there was no way we could catch up the the front runner.
MUEN: MARQ, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US IF ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN THE NEW BATMAN SEQUEL?
DISONIC: Not much, I'm afraid. I had to sign a confidentiality agreement, so mum's the word. What I can tell you is that I have a teeny, tiny, role as a hospital patient in a scene that involves the Joker. I was on set for about 3 days and sweated my ass off in the costume they gave me to wear. Pajamas and a robe are supposed to be comfy, right? Well, they wound up giving me a spa robe to wear, because it looked better on camera. Mind you, it was like 90 degrees out and we were either out in the hot sun or crammed into packed busses with no A/C for hours at a time. The cool thing is that I got to meet Chris Nolan, Anthony Michael Hall, and Heath Ledger, all of whom I admire quite a bit. I wish I could tell you more about the scene, but you'll just have to wait until next summer.
MUEN: YOUR SONGS ARE GOING TO BE FEATURED IN TWO NEW MOVIES. WHAT ARE THE NAMES OF THE MOVIES AND WHEN WILL THEY BE RELEASED?
DISONIC: The two movies are "Grilling Bobby Hicks" and "The Moving Men". Both movies are still in post production, as far as I know, and should be released sometime in early '08.
MUEN: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME OF THE BAND?
DISONIC: We get asked that a lot, actually. The name goes way back to Dave and the original singer, Mike Laskowski. They had been in a band called Crestfallen together and wanted to come up with a name for this new project they were starting. They were playing around with words, just sort of mixed "dissonant" and "sonic" together, and out came "disonic". It sounded cool, so the name stuck.
MUEN: WHERE DID YOU RECORD YOUR DEBUT ALBUM "THE VALUE OF TRUTH"? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO RECORD? TELL US BRIEFLY ABOUT THE PROCESS YOU WENT THROUGH.
DISONIC: We recorded "Value of Truth" in two parts. First, we did the drums and bass at a large studio called Rax Trax, on the northside of Chicago. After Shane and Paz finished their parts, the rest of us tracked in Dave's home studio on the southside. Lucky for us, he happens to be a producer by trade and had both the space and the equipment to adequately track the guitars, keyboards, and vocals. Dave and I even converted a small walk-in closet in his dad's basement into a vocal booth, by soundproofing it with old mattress pads and U-Haul furniture blankets. It was a lot of work, but it paid off. We took about 6 weeks to track and mix the whole thing, which included a LOT of writing sessions for both Dave and I. It's all kind of a blur. We hardly slept, and most of the time we were either cranky as hell or super-depressed. But ultimately it got done, and the result is what you hear now.
MUEN: HOW DID DAVE KOHUT AND JOHN DOYLE GET INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OF THIS CD?
DISONIC: David our lead guitarist, and John's a long-time friend of ours. He had produced our 3-song demo before this, and we really wanted him to be a part of the EP. He has a fantastic ear, and it's kind of cool to just sit and watch him and Dave trade thoughts and ideas in the studio. He's fantastic at getting just the right tone for each instrument.
MUEN: WHEN DID YOU SIGN WITH CHAMELEON RECORDS?
DISONIC: We actually met Tawana Robinson through myspace, back in late '06. She had heard our 3 song demo and contacted us, offering to help us out with our next release.
MUEN: I KNOW MUSICIANS DON'T LIKE TO PUT A LABEL ON THEIR MUSIC BUT IT IS ONE WAY OF DESCRIBING WHAT YOU ARE HEARING. YOU CLASSIFY YOURSELF AS ALTERNATIVE METAL RIGHT? HOW DID YOU FALL INTO THAT GENRE OF MUSIC?
DISONIC: Well, we never classified ourselves as anything really. It wasn't until we started getting magazine reviews for "Value" that we started hearing the term "alt-metal" connected with us. Before that, we just kinda considered ourselves a hard rock band. Not sure where it came from, but I like the term, though.
MUEN: I WAS RECENTLY ON A RADIO SHOW MYSELF AND FOUND IT TO BE ALOT OF FUN. TELL US ABOUT THE LIGHTHOUSE ROCKS RADIO SHOW YOU WERE ON IN JUNE.
DISONIC: Phil's a great guy, and it's always fun to do interviews with him. I'd spoken with him once before in January, and he offered to interview us again recently. Since he's in another state, we had to do the interview over a speakerphone, which wasn't the easiest thing in the world. Imagine us all 5 of us huddled around this little phone in the corner of the room, shouting over each other for about 30 minutes. Still, it was fun.
MUEN: I LOVE IT WHEN I HEAR THAT THE BAND MEMBERS MAINTAIN THEIR SITES AND MYSPACE PAGES. IT'S IMPORTANT TO KEEP THAT CONNECTION TO THE FANS. IF THINGS GET REALLY BIG FOR YOU, AND WE ARE SURE THEY WILL, DO YOU THINK YOU WILL CONTINUE TO DO IT YOURSELF?
DISONIC: I hope so. I think myspace is great for that. It's a direct connection with the people who support you and listen to your music. I can't imagine having somebody else do that for us.
MUEN: WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU?
DISONIC: Well, right now we're busy working on some new material for the next CD.
MUEN: ANY FINAL WORDS OR SHOUT OUTS TO YOUR FANS?
DISONIC: Guys, thanks so much all your love and support. We hope you'll keep listening. Stay cool!
MUEN: WE AT MUEN WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THE INTERVIEW AND WE WISH YOU THE VERY BEST OF LUCK IN ALL THAT YOU DO!!
DISONIC: Thanks!! Godspeed!Interview by Shauna O'Donnell |
