INTERVIEW with BIOMORTAL (United Kingdom) myspace.com/biomortal
Paul of
BIOMORTAL
(London, UK)
MUEN: WHAT IS BIOMORTAL DOING CURRENTLY?
Currently we're writing and recording new material, which will either be an EP or an album, probably an album. We're also currently rehearsing and getting ready for some gigs.
MUEN: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BIOMORTAL FOR, AND WHAT IS THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE MEMBERS IN THE BAND?
Hmmm I couldn't tell you the average age, as that requires basic math skills, which as a musician, I do not possess, but the band was originally known as 'Stinkweed' and that was basically just me and my brother. When we wrote and everything - we got people in to play it live and we became a full line-up. So i'd say we've (regardless of name), has been going for around a year and a half in some form or another. We're all in our 20s apart from Jamie the bassist, he's the grandaddy of the band.
MUEN: HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE NAME BIOMORTAL?
Well, I pretty much just decided that our sound was organic, but machine-like, so wanted a name to reflect that, so obviously 'Bio' came up, then I just tried sticking other words behind it. It wasn't really one of those, meaningful names, it just seemed pretty metal hehe.
MUEN: WHERE DO YOU RECORD AT, AND IS ANYONE ELSE INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OUTSIDE OF THE BAND?
All the recording, writing, production and making the tea is done at my home studio, Fat Squirrel Studios by my brother Robert and me. It's worked well so far, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it etc.
MUEN: WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT ARE YOU USING?
For recording? I use, Alesis, Soundcraft and Tascam desks into my laptop, where I record with Reaper. I use FL Studio 7XL to host my plethora of VST synths, Sampletank and Miroslav Philharmonik are favourites of mine. Guitarwise I use my tried and trusted Ibanez Explorer II (previously owned by Dave Mustaine, while he was in Metallica), an Ibanez RG505 custom and a Phil Pro which I got from an endorsement deal.
MUEN: WHO DOES THE BACKING VOCALS, AND HOW CLOSE WOULD YOU SAY YOUR SOUND IS TO THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS, WHEN PLAYING LIVE?
I (Paul) do the backing vocals live and various on recordings, if it's a harmony or a lead vocal part, Rob does it on record, but if it's a counter melody, usually that's me. I'd say we're pretty close to our recorded sound live, we're definitely very tight, the main things is getting the millions of harmonies and such into the songs, but I try my best hehe.
MUEN: HOW OFTEN DO YOU PLAY LIVE, AND WHERE DO YOU PLAY USUALLY?
We really need to get our fingers out and play live, so far we've only done one gig, and have one coming, but I believe we do have a few things in the works. Live wise we play only clubs that have a PA and are relatively known, ie no pubs!
MUEN: ARE YOU ALL ORIGINALLY FROM THE LONDON AREA?
My brother, Neil and I are. Jamie is from Wales and Jakub is from Poland.
MUEN: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CURRENT MUSIC SCENE IN LONDON?
There's a music scene in London?!!!
MUEN: WHAT IS THE SONG "LETTER" ABOUT?
The song is about the time Robert was dating someone. He wrote a letter for her showing how much she meant to him. He left this by her pillow while she was waiting outside her home to say goodbye to him, Soon after this the relationship went tits up haha. Oh well that's just life... |
