BILLY BOY ON POISON
(Los Angeles, CA)
Interview by Lissy MacMillan
One thing I love about my job is that when I find a really excellent band I have the opportunity to tell so many people about it!! Billy Boy On Poison may be young, but if you havent heard of them yet you will pretty soon! Theyve played with Stone Temple Pilots, have played numerous legendary clubs in the LA area and even got a mention on The David Letterman show from Kiefer Sutherland. Their style of music is a Rock & Roll that I believe weve been missing recently, but with a fresh new twist that its not something youve ever heard before. Go and check them out on their Myspace page and see for yourself after youve read the interview of course.
MUEN: HI, THANKS FOR DOING THIS INTERVIEW. I JUST LOVE YOUR SOUND! MY FIRST QUESTION FOR YOU WOULD BE: HOW DID YOU ALL MEET AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU ALL BEEN PLAYING TOGETHER AS A BAND?
DAVIS: I was writing and recording with a production team when I was 14 and I really wanted to be in a band, so in the middle of everything I called up three of my good friends from childhood who I knew were also playing instruments. One played baseball with me at a local park and another one went to preschool with me. The fifth member (Jesi), shes my Cousin from Colorado and we always talked about being in a band together. After a few changes, the current line-up has been together for about 1 years.
MUEN: YOURE STILL ALL PRETTY YOUNG TO HAVE ACHIEVED SO MUCH ALREADY- HOW DID YOU GET DISCOVERED AND GET SIGNED TO IRONWORKS MUSIC?
DAVIS: Well, we played a lot of shows around Hollywood. We were really lucky, one of our managers knew some of the club owners, so we were able to play The Whisky, The Roxy, some school fairs, all these legendary stages before we were 15, 16 and 17 years old. I guess because we were so young and were playing much different music than the other bands on the scene, we caught the attention of the industry. One of our shows at Safari Sams, Jude Cole was brought down to see us through a program director friend of one of our parents. Jude really dug the live show and asked me to come down to Ironworks the next day and hang out with him and Kiefer!! We brought all the material we had recorded and a couple of videos we had made and they wanted to sign us that day. We really loved the vibe and the fact that they basically clean up and mix the songs, and basically put it out as is. They also danced around the studio and had a real love for what we were about!!
MUEN: WHATS THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME BILLY BOY ON POISON AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
DAVIS: We had a bunch of other names picked out like The Craze and The Krayz, and Craze or Krayz. I didnt really like any of them and there were many!! One day I was watching A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and the line Well, well, well, well. If it isnt fat, stinking billygoat Billy-Boy in poison. How art thou, thy globby bottle of cheap, stinking chip-oil? Come and get one in the yarbles, if you have any yarbles, you eunuch jelly thou. I actually thought they said billy boy on poison and it just stuck!!! It was either that or The Yarbles or The Eunuchs!!
MUEN: ITS PRETTY OBVIOUS TO ME WHO YOUR INFLUENCES ARE, BUT WOULD YOU MIND SHARING THEM HERE, ALSO HAS ANYTHING NON-MUSICALLY HAD AN INFLUENCE ON YOU?
DAVIS: As you said obviously, BOWIE, THE STONES, THE BEATLES, THE WHO, NY DOLLS, IGGY AND THE STOOGES, DYLAN, and newer stuff like NIRVANA, STP, PRINCE, anything with JACK WHITE in it, EAGLES OF DEATH METAL, BLOOD BROTHERS, BRIGHT EYES, ELIOT SMITH and too many others to mention!! Non- musicallyblunts and fire ;)
MUEN: YOU HAVE AN EP OUT, SWEET MESS. WHERE DID YOU RECORD IT AND WHO DID YOU WORK WITH ON IT?
DAVIS: We recorded it all over San Fernando Valley and at Ironworks, but mostly a place called Hard Drive Analog and Digital on Lankershim Blvd. We worked with a great production team called RODEO PUNK MUSIC. They are Crissy Sorensen, Big Stu Brantley and Michael Gurley. Also, Jude Cole, Florian and Dean and Robert Deleo (of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS).
MUEN: WHATS YOUR FAVORITE SONG THAT YOUVE RECORDED SO FAR AND WHY?
DAVIS: Its usually the most recent one so, Im Ready it probably wont be on the first LP. But our favorite for the record is probably Higher Power.
MUEN: WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH DEAN AND ROBERT DELEO FROM STONE TEMPLE PILOTS?
DAVIS: Oh my god, it was amazing and hard! Those guys are perfectionists so we learned a lot about work ethic and songwriting.
MUEN: IF YOU WERE TO DO A COVER SONG, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO DO AND WHY?
DAVIS: We have!! Weve covered Speaking In Tongues By EAGLES OF DEATH METAL and Suffragette City by BOWIE. Weve recently been working on Star, Star by THE STONES.
MUEN: I WAS ON YOUR MYSPACE PAGE WATCHING ALL YOUR VIDEOS, WHICH ARE VERY ENTERTAINING! I REALLY LIKED THE ONE FOR ANGRY YOUNG MAN CAN YOU TELL US ALL ABOUT IT?
DAVIS: Basically we met Jake Hoffman (Dustins son) who dated one of our big sisters. Jake is a huge supporter and he wanted to do a video. He came to see us play at a friends backyard birthday party and freaked out!! The next thing we know we received a treatment for the song and made the video. It was so much fun because we love Jake and he made it super casual and low pressure!!
MUEN: YOU JUST PLAYED THE TROUBADOUR THE OTHER NIGHT, HOW WAS THE SHOW? WHATS YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY?
DAVIS: The show was amazing, we had a great time and the crowd was insane!! Right now Id have to say The Troubadour locally, but we supported STP on a couple of dates and The Pearl Theatre at The Palms in Las Vegas is pretty sick and The Fillmore in Detroit has the best fans ever.
MUEN: WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT PLAYING LIVE SHOWS?
DAVIS: Its what we live for! The rest of the business is pretty cool too, but playing for kids and fans of any age is why we started the band in the first place!!
MUEN: I KNOW ID LOVE TO SEE YOU PLAY! DO YOU THINK YOULL BE GOING ON TOUR SOON? WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE?
DAVIS: Definitely!!! The more the better. Right now were hoping to release our first LP in the UK and Europe and tour there alot. After which well set out sights on the US of A!!
