INTERVIEW with ASHES ASHES (Cali)

By Shauna O'Donnell
MUEN: THE RELEASE OF YOUR NEW ALBUM "ARIES" WAS ON JANUARY 1ST OF 2008. IT INCLUDED 2 OLD SONGS AND 8 NEW. I READ THE REASON FOR THIS WAS BECAUSE THE EP'S WERE NO LONGER GOING TO BE AVAILABLE. IS THAT TRUE? WHY DID YOU DECIDE NOT TO HAVE THE EP'S AVAILABLE ANYMORE?
Eric: Yes that is true. We feel like our music has changed since those first two EPs. We kept the songs that we felt would fit best with the new album. Though our first EP (Fly Away Phoenix) is not available at shows, you can still find it on iTunes.
MUEN: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM "ARIES". DESCRIBE FOR US IF YOU WILL THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM FROM WRITING TO THE RECORDING. FOR INSTANCE, DO YOU GUYS WRITE FOR THE ALBUM IN THE SAME ROOM OR DO YOU SEND BITS AND PIECES TO EACH OTHER VIA INTERNET? HOW LONG DID YOU WORK ON THE ALBUM? WHO PRODUCED IT? WHERE DID YOU RECORD IT?
John: We all write in the same room. Someone will come up with an idea that quickly develops into a full song. We have never done any writing over the internet. lolz says Alanna. It took about two weeks to write the album but it took months to record it. We recorded eight tracks at Head Change Studios with Steve Beacham and we recorded the other two at Castle Ultimate Studios with Aaron Hellam. As far as producing, we did most of it ourselves. Steve and Aaron helped as well.
MUEN: WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THE WAY OF PUBLICITY FOR THE NEW ALBUM? HOW ARE YOU SPREADING THE WORD?
Eric: We have sent copies of the album to various magazines to be reviewed. We do a lot of promoting on the internet.
MUEN: HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR SOUND?
John: Its really hard to define our sound. The new album is very diverse. We tried to make every song sound different from the last but at the same time each song shares certain characteristics.
MUEN: HOW LONG HAS THE BAND BEEN TOGETHER?
Corey: The band started in August of 2006.
MUEN: ALANNA IS FAIRLY NEW TO THE BAND AND I THINK SHE MAKES A GREAT ADDITION. HOW DID YOU GUYS FIRST HOOK UP?
Alanna: I went to school with Eric and Corey but never really met them until I was asked to play keyboard on two Ashes Ashes songs at one of their shows. They asked me to join the next day.
John: One day I didnt know Alanna and the next day she was in the band.
MUEN: TELL US ABOUT EMT, IS THAT YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE?
Corey: They are an awesome group of guys that help us out with stuff.
MUEN: THIS IS YOUR DEBUT ALBUM RIGHT? WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE? IN OTHER WORDS WHAT WOULD YOU NOT DO AGAIN AND WHAT WOULD YOU ABSOLUTELY DO AGAIN?
Eric: Yes this is our debut album. Next album we plan on recording it all at once rather than over a long period of time. Alanna joined the band after we had written half the album, so it will be nice to have her throughout the entire writing process next time.
MUEN: YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH SOME REALLY GREAT BANDS. WHICH ONE OR ONES HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOU?
John: Meg and Dia was an awesome band to play with.
Eric: It was an honor to share the stage with one of my biggest influences Mike Hererra of MxPx. That was awesome.
Corey: So Long Forgotten puts on a great show. We played with them back in July.
Alanna: Brea!
MUEN: WHERE IS MOST OF YOUR FAN BASE LOCATED? IS IT MOSTLY HERE IN CALIFORNIA?
Alanna: Most of our fan base is in San Jose. Those kids rule lolz.
MUEN: I LOVE THE SONG "AIRPLANE" AND THE VIDEO IS AMAZING. IS THAT YOUR ONLY VIDEO?
John: Yes, Airplane is our only video so far. We hope to make many more.
MUEN: NOW THAT THE ALBUM HAS BEEN RELEASED WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS? ARE YOU GOING TO DO SOME TOURING?
Corey: We plan to play as many shows as we can this year. Two of us are still in high school so we will tour around that schedule.
MUEN: IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO SAY TO OUR WONDERFUL MUEN READERS?
Alanna: Buy our new album and check out our myspace!
Eric: yeah that.
Corey: eat subway.
John: eat fresh.Interview by Shauna O'Donnell |
