Clip from Giants Mid-Season Special, '98 season, on KTVU

Narrator (Mark Ibanez): One guy who will certainly jog out on to the field in a Giants uniform when the new ballpark opens is Billy Mueller. Although you'll have a hard time convincing him of that certainty. Young, talented, but extremely serious, and taking nothing for granted.

Bill: You establish yourself over a period of years or the time you're in the big leagues. Two months into a season isn't a season. Your season's six, seven months long.

Narrator: Although Mueller has spent most of his time over at third base with the Giants, it's clear that one of the things Dusty likes most about this youngster: his willingness to move around. And he's had to on occasion, particularly after the injury to Jeff Kent.

Bill: You know, when I broke into the minor leagues I was a shortstop. And they said they needed a second baseman, and if I were to sit on my hands and say I couldn't play second, I'd probably never be here, because in rookie ball I played second base. So you know, over the years you're always going to have to be flexible in this game.

Narrator: No doubt the Giants have another gamer on their hands. Since day one in the bigs for Mueller he's hovered around the .300 mark at the plate. Yet he wants to prove to the fans, but most of all, to himself, that nobody has seen his best yet.

Bill: Physically, I'm out there trying to get stronger and stay as consistent as I can each day and to gain experiences very valuable to be up here in the big leagues and to play every day. It's just a very gifted thing to be able to do and I'm just happy to be able to accomplish it every day and very proud and very grateful.
