Pre-game interview with Ted Robinson on KTVU, 5/25/01 Ted: Well, it's now official. Returning to Pac Bell Park in Chicago Cubs blue is Bill Mueller. Billy, first of all, take that hat off; you gotta show everybody the hair. Come on. Bill: [Chuckles] I'm leaving it on. Ted: The Bill Mueller locks... that were famous all throughout San Francisco are gone. Why did you cut the hair? Bill: Well, it was definitely more... the heat in Chicago is pretty good, so I'm just going to keep it short so I can stay cool out there. Here you can get away with it because it's so cool during the summer. So I'm just going to keep it short, a different look. It was just getting too long; it was just a mess. I had a mess up there, so I cleaned it up a little bit. Ted: All right, your start on the field has been pretty good, at least on paper. Bill: Well, I'm getting an opportunity to play every day, and that's all you can ask for. I'm just trying to fulfill my role, get on base, and do the same things as I was trying to do here [in San Francisco]. Help the guys behind me, and make everyone around me get better. So you know, I'm not trying to do anything different, just continue to play hard and give Don [Baylor] the same stuff every day and continue to try and help the team win. Ted: During spring training I think you mentioned you were trying to do some work, maybe some minor changes in your swing? Are you happy with that work? Bill: Yeah, I'm getting better. This game is a game of adjustments, and every year you have to make adjustments. I want to grow into the game, so I had to make some changes to the swing, and always try to improve, so I'm trying to work mechanically to get better, and focus better and have better concentration. It's great strength to do that because I'm out there every single day, and I'm getting an opportunity to do what I can do. Ted: Now you're living in an apartment not far from Wrigley Field, right? Bill: About 11 blocks. So, I'm really please with that; it's a beautiful place. And I'm really excited about being out there, and being kind of closer to home, and just enjoying the different situation, trying to make the best of it. Ted: Giants players have already planned a party in your apartment when the Giants come out in August, you know. Bill: Well, I hope so. I want them there. I hope they keep that in mind. I'd love to have them. It's a great group of guys here, and I miss them dearly, and friendships aren't lost. I'm just happy I made them and I'm going to keep them for a long time with these guys. Ted: I'm sure you'll hear that all weekend long from these fans. Bill: Well, that's great. This is a great place to play. You don't realize how much you really like something until it's gone. I really enjoyed my time here and I really miss it. |
