Paiute Deadfall Trap.  I first saw this trap trigger design in Larry Dean Olsen's book on Wilderness Survival.  Its a sensitive trigger.   Its a little more fiddly to set up than a Figure-4 trap, but just the thing for the smaller critters.
This one, set for chipmonks, is made from found sticks with a teally no whittling. The string is a bit of double ply twisted up by hand from some Jute fiber.  The upright has a natural Y in it.  The diagonal has a natural bend that lets it seat in the Y.  The tab has a little hole bored in it which is not really necessary but it can eliminate some torque when the trigger comes under pressure.  The 'bait stick is hidden behind the diagonal piece of the trigger in this photograph.  It is actually stuck into the ground under the deadfall at the far end.  the bait is bird seed, and that is just on either side of the bait stick.

Trigger Detail

On the right is a deatil of the trigger.  You can see the seeds on either side of the bait stick.  I have found this easier than trying to put a seed or a peanut into a super thing bait stick.  As the critter goes from one side to the other they trip the trigger.

Shop Made Trigger
Below is another Paiute Deadfall trigger. This one was 'shop made' out of scrap from a wood working project using a fine toothed back saw and a power drill and some cotton string.  The set is the same as the more natural one.
