Question: Are you saved? Why aren't you sure? Didn't you accept Jesus as your personal Saviour? Answer: I'm sure you'll find these questions familiar if you've been in contact with Christians of other denominations. They are difficult to answer because a "yes/no" answer would not be satisfactory to either party. A good Catholic would not think of "yes" as an answer to the first question because it would sound too over-confident or he is aware of his tremendous capacity to sin. A "no" would give the Christian strong reasons to ask the next two questions which would eventually shake the Catholic's faith. The following Bible verses should clear all doubts: "No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." (I Corinthians 9:27) "Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed - not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence - continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling..." (Phillipians 2:12) "If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God." (Hebrews 10:26-27) Hence, a possible answer would be, "Yes, I am saved by the blood of Christ but I would need to continue to work out my salvation lest I lose it through careless sinning."
