The only trouble now, was Stu had shot the last of his 16 gauge shells and we had one more mallard each to get. We ended up taking turns with my twelve to finish our limits. We were still lacking one black duck though. We sat another hour, and just watched the mallards dump into our blocks! It was a glorious sight, and I only wished I had brought the video camera, because it would've been great footage! After an hour of that, we gave up on the other black duck, and called it a day. We were completely satisified with what we already had. A limit of mallards and a banded black duck is great in any hunters book! Those are the kind of days that live in our memories forever!

Just as a side note, we hunted that same poin the following weekend. As we walked out onto the point, we flushed about 500 birds off the water, bith ducks and geese. They went up in a roar of wing beats, quacks and honks! That was enough to make the day worth while right there! The body heat from those birds must have been the only thing keeping the water from freezing. We sat the decoys out just before the sun came up and killed one mallard in the first ten minutes of shooting time. At 8:30 am, we had to break ice to get back out to the decoys! They were frozen in place and completely iced over the top! As ducks passed by our spead, we were pretty sure we could actually hear them laughing at us. Oh well, not everyday works out perfectly. It's the "golden" days that keeps us coming back for more!!
By 7:30, we had six mallards in the bag. We had also taken a lone black duck. It came in all by itself during a slower period. Stu got off the first shot and missed. Directly after his first shot, I squeezed the trigger and down he went! We didn't know it at first, but my first shot and Stu's second, rang out at the exact same timne! Neither of us had heard the others shot, so initally we were both under the impression that we had delivered the final blow alone. As Stu took the canoe out to retrieve the black, I saw his arms go up, and he yelled "JEWELERY!!". The black duck had a leg band, which only added to a great day. We don't get a lot of bands around here, so the few we do get are worth their weight in gold!
