Mu Delta Zeta History
Seeking the need for the presence of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. to be organized in the Greater Killeen area, Barbara Campbell, Lois Fields, Elva Chase, Martha Powell, Cora Clay, and Johnnie Parker came together to organize a chapter.  With their hard work and effort, Mu Delta Zeta Chapter received its charter on May 23, 1983, under International President Edith V. Francis.  Barbara Campbell was elected Basileus of the chapter.  Meetings were held in the homes of Sorors.  Under Barbara Campbells leadership, the sorority participated in community activities such as UNICEF and Sickle Cell Anemia Screenings.  One Scholarship Tea was held and a scholarship was awarded to Vanessa Harvey who was attending Central Texas College.  Ms. Harvey now resides in Houston, Texas.

In 1994, Regional Director Dr. Nell Ingram, members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Sorors in the Central Texas area came together to reactivate the chapter.  Those Sorors were Sabrina Francis, Carla Keaton, Shawna Dixon, Winona Williams, Linda Dixon, Perline Walker, Betty Barr, Brenda Abrams, Ileen Rogers, and Lendy Jones.  Though many of those who helped reorganize the chapter have moved, the chapter continues to grow as Sorors move into the area.

In March of 1994, Sabrina Francis was elected President, Shawna Dixon as Secretary, and Carla Keaton as Treasurer.  Due to Soror Francis military move, in October of 1994, Betty Barr was elected as President with Lendy Jones as 1st Vice President, Carla Keaton as 2nd Vice President, Shawna Dixon as Secretary, Linda Dixon as Treasurer, Ernestine Adams as Parliamentarian.  Under he leadership, the chapter started a Scholarship Fund, Annual Talent Show, and began to participate in community projects such as the March of Dimes, Highway Clean up, Mission Soup Kitchen, Angel Tree, and Killeen Mentoring Program.

In July of 1996, Shawna Dixon was elected President, Betty Barr as 1st Vice President, Ileen Rogers as 2nd Vice President, Cheryl Robertson as Secretary, Tonya Williams as Treasurer, Elva Chase as Historian, and Lendy Jones as Parliamentarian.  The chapter adopted East Ward Elementary School to provide school supplies for needy children, rejoined the fight against Sickle Cell Anemia, as well as continue the projects implemented under Betty Barrs administration. In August of 1997, Shawna Dixon was reelected President, Betty Barr as 1st Vice President, Ileen Rogers as 2nd Vice president, Cheryl Roberson as Secretary, Tonya Williams as Treasurer, Lendy Jones as Parliamentarian, and Elva Chase as Historian.  The chapter established an Ammicette youth auxiliary in 1997.  In  1998, the chapter inducted three new members: Lillian Lennon, Cynthia Morris, and Joanne Watson. Under her leadership, the chapter started The Essence of Leadership essay contest in 1998 as a way to disperse scholarship funds.  In July of 1998, Shawna Dixon was reelected President, Betty Barr as 1st Vice President, Elva Chase as 2nd Vice President, Ileen Rogers as Secretary, Cheryl Robertson as Treasurer, Lillian Lennon as Parliamentarian, and Lendy Jones as Historian.  In May of 1999, scholarships were awarded to Constance Jones, a then junior at Ellison High School, and Michael Jamieson, a then senior at Florence High School. Mr. Jamieson went on to attend the United States Air Force Academy. In August of 1999, Shawna Dixon was reelected President, Elva Chase 2nd Vice President, Lendy Jones as Secretary, Cheryl Robertson as Treasurer, Lillian Lennon as Parliamentarian, and Cynthia Morris as Historian.  In October of 1999, the chapter participated in the March of Dimes Make a Difference Day project by distributing information on the Texas Children Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to Killeen Kmart shoppers.  In April of 2000, the chapter participated in the March of Dimes Walk America.  In May of 2000, seven new members were inducted:  Katina Bowers, Kaylar Griffin, Sonya Harriott, Bernadette Hicks, Melissa McIntyre, Pamela Thompson, and Ora Washington.

In May of 2000, Elva Chase was elected President.  In August of 2001, with the assistance of Sallie Mae Corporation, Carols Art Gallery, and Patriot Pontiac, complete packets of school supplies were provided for five children in each grade level (thirty five children) at East Ward Elementary School.  In November of 2000, we became members of the Killeen Chamber of Commerce.  A food basket and coats for the children of our adopted family were provided in December of 2000.  On January 15, 2001, we participated in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade in downtown Killeen.
