VAGINAL
DELIVERY FOLLOWING CAESAREAN POSES
BOTH RISKS AND BENEFITS, STUDY SHOWS
In
a recent study of nearly 48,000 women who participated in 15 studies published
between 1989 and 1999, University of Michigan researchers have concluded that
women who had undergone a caesarean section and subsequently delivered vaginally
were twice as likely to have a ruptured uterus compared to those who chose to
have another caesarean, the Washington Post reports. However, women who
delivered vaginally after caesarean showed a 30% lower risk of fever, a 43%
lower risk of needing a blood transfusion and a 61% lower risk of requiring a
hysterectomy. But infants born to women who delivered vaginally after previously
undergoing caesarean delivery were slightly more likely to suffer fatalities:
Scientists identified 38 cases of infant death among 19,842 post-caesarean
vaginal deliveries, compared to 10 fatalities among 13,292 second-time caesarean
births. The Post reports that the study, published in the November issue
of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is the first
"comprehensive assessment of a variety of recent studies on birth-method
risks." However, the Post notes that the study "may be
biased," as the women participating in the study "chose their own
delivery method rather than being randomly assigned."
