"Before delivery, the spontaneously laboring uterus
is very likely to be exquisitely sensitive to oxytocin.
Even with an intravenous dose of a few milliunits per minute,
the pregnant uterus may contract so violently
as to kill the fetus, rupture itself, or both".

VAGINAL DELIVERY FOLLOWING CAESAREAN POSES
BOTH RISKS AND BENEFITS, STUDY SHOWS

In a recent study of nearly 48,000 women who participated in 15 studies published between 1989 and 1999, University of Michigan researchers have concluded that women who had undergone a caesarean section and subsequently delivered vaginally were twice as likely to have a ruptured uterus compared to those who chose to have another caesarean, the Washington Post reports. However, women who delivered vaginally after caesarean showed a 30% lower risk of fever, a 43% lower risk of needing a blood transfusion and a 61% lower risk of requiring a hysterectomy. But infants born to women who delivered vaginally after previously undergoing caesarean delivery were slightly more likely to suffer fatalities:  Scientists identified 38 cases of infant death among 19,842 post-caesarean vaginal deliveries, compared to 10 fatalities among 13,292 second-time caesarean births.  The Post reports that the study, published in the November issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is the first "comprehensive assessment of a variety of recent studies on birth-method risks."  However, the Post notes that the study "may be biased," as the women participating in the study "chose their own delivery method rather than being randomly assigned."    (Samiei, Washington Post, 12/5/00).
