Frequently Asked Questions
for beginning skating
1.  What will I learn?
The MPFSC used the USFSA Skate With U.S. Program with 8 levels of progressive difficulty.  After mastering these skills, you will be ready to learn spins, jumps, and footwork by either taking advanced classes of the Learn to Skate or by taking Private lessons with a MPFSC coach.

2.
When do classes meet?
Classes for basic skills are offered from Mid September to Mid June.  These classes are usually held on Monday and Thursday nights from 6:00-6:50 p.m.  You may want to skate one night of classes or both (for a reduced rate).  It is your choice!  Skaters in levels 3-8 are encouraged to skate both nights in order to maximize their skating ability.  The more you practice, the mor progress you will make.

3.
What is Practice Ice?
Practice Ice provides time for your to work on the skills you have been learning in class.  No lessons are taught on practice but sometimes additional help may be available during this time.  Practice ice is 25 minutes long.

4.
How do I register?
Registration information can be found at the I.C.E. Arena, on the MPFSC  bulletin board in the lobby of the rink, printed off our website, or by calling 989-506-1698 for more information.

5.
Where can I get skates?
You can obtain rental skates from the I.C.E. Arena for a small cost of $1.  You can also purchase ice skates from local businesses such as Walmart, Meijer, MC Sports, etc.  However, because skating is a seasonal sport, you may only find skates at these locations between Oct. and Feb.  The I.C.E. Arena also has a pro shop where skates can be purchased.

6.
How should skates fit?
Well fitted skates are essential for success and enjoyment on the ice.  A snug fit is needed for ankle support.  Wear a light-weight sock or skating tights for the best fit and feel.

Skates must be rented or purchased prior to skating class.  If you are renting skates from the I.C.E. Arena, please allow yourself enough time to pay for them and put them on.

7.
How do I lace my skates?
Loosen the laces, pull the tongue forward and insert your foot into the boot.  Center the tongue and pull up on it.  Then tighten the laces through the eyelets so that they feel snug.  Follow by criss crossing the laces snug around each hook.  After you reach the top hook, tie a tight bow.  If the ends of the laces are too long, wrap the laces through the hooks again and then tie a bow in front.  Do not let the ends of the laces drag on the ice.  A good fit will allow you to place on finger in the back of the boot.

8.
What should I wear?
Our rink is inside, so you will not need heavy outdoor clothing.  Wear comfortable and loose clothing that will allow movement.  Ex. sweatshirts, turtlenecks, lightweight winter jackets, athletic pants, skating dresses, tights, lightweight snowpants (tots).  Gloves are a must for falls and learning to get up. Helmets are mandatory for Snowplow Sam skaters (ages 4-5) and strongly recommended for beginning skaters in the first levels of the Basic Skills program.

9.
Do I need private lessons?
Most skaters will be able to pass the basic skills program levels without needing private lessons.  However, private lessons will allow a skater to move through the levels more quickly because they will have more help with specific skills on a one-on-one basis rather than with a group of skaters.  Our professionals can take private lessons on our club ice times.  This will be an additional fee from the Learn to Skate Program.  For more information about private lessons, call 989-506-1698 or email [email protected].

Please direct any other questions about beginning skating to the number and email listed above.
