Moldoviţa

Built by Petru Rareş, it has been painted by painters from Suceava, resembling it on a greater scale. Predominant colours are yellow and blue.

Some paintings occur also here, as they have occured also at the other monasteries. So is the Prayer of All Saints. Here, its representation (the saints are grouped 2 by 2) resembles somewhat the “sacre conversazioni”. Others are typical, or nicer here.

Jesaia’s Tree, showing that Jesus is a direct descendant of the King Solomon, a painting that comes up also in Western countries, reaches its monumentality and complexity in the period of Petru Rareş. The most ample painting of Jesaia’s Tree before that one in Moldova is the one of St. Margaret’s Church in Mediaş (Transilvania).

Typical for the painting of Moldoviţa is a ladder, depicting the Tolls Of The Skies. Each soul has to pass a series of tolls before entering Heaven. If failing grossly at one, the soul falls of the ladder and is welcomed by the devils.

The painting of the interior is very different from one place to another, suggesting that several painters have worked here at the same time. The first room depicts on its vault God’s Mother Blessing, all other paintings being related to Her. The main room shows the cycleof Sufferings: Peter’s Failure, The Road of the Cross and the Crossing. It is a monumental painting, with and evident feeling of the dramatic.
