Arbore

It is probably the only one known as a monastery without being one. It never has been more than a church of a village.

Arbore has been painted by Dragoş Coman during the second rule of Petru Rareş. The characteristic of the painting of Arbore shows both oriental and western elements, which makes it that sort of special, that it has not to be missed.

The church has been built by a Lady, after the death of the noble Luca Arbore. The paintings on the exterior of the western wall are read to express the tragedy of Luca Arbore and his sons. So, for instance, the series of paintings of the Genesis emphasise the exclusion from Paradise and the lifes of some military saints (St. George, St. Dumitru, St. Nichita, St. Paraschiva) insist as much of those parts of their life that involve suffering or death. The paintings bring forward a diversity oftypologies: mimmicks, ages, different social classes, but formality. All these make us think of a Gothic Court style, in its North-Italian version, with some influences of the German Gothic style.
