Wine tasting at Murfatlar

Until recently, the best vineyard Romania’s, the Murfatlar region is located in the middle of the Hills of Dobrogea, where there is the perfect climate for producing sweeter wines. It is known as such since the antique Greek and Roman times – Ovid, that has been exiled to Tomis (today’s Constanţa), tells about the strange habits of the locals during the winter: they sold so many meters of wine, and instead of drinking it, they ate it as it was.

Beginning of the 20th century, the local grapes were destroyed by a malady, and the first European sorts have been planted. Among these, the sorts that have it really good here, are the Chardonnay, the Pinot Gris and the Pinot Noir. Now they produce also Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Traminer, Riesling Italian, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of all these, I can highly recommend the Riesling Italian (white, dry), Chardonnay (white, half-sweet), Pinot Noir (red, half-dry) and Cabernet Sauvignon (red, half-sweet).

The approximately 3000 ha of vineyards in the Murfatlar region, benefit from the dry soil, that are rich in lime-stone, and of the continental climate with very hot summers, long falls and very few rainfalls.
