Our nominee for professional volunteer of the year is our favorite optometrist. Dr. Jim Welborn. Dr. Welborn is a dedicated, hard working, professional volunteer involved not only with our clinic but in the community. He is active in the Lions Club and has been the recipient of many community awards. Dr. Welborn has been a part of the MHCC from our first day; donating the equipment needed and personally setting up our eye clinic. He has rarely missed a clinic in the last six years. Dr. Welborn is a quiet man with a big heart. He is kind and caring with his patients. He shows by example that each person is a child of God and is to be treated with love and respect. He spends 30-45 minutes with each patient he examines. Many of the persons he examines have never had their eyes checked or if they have it was years ago. If glasses are needed, he sees that they are ordered and are ready for pick-up at the next clinic, two weeks later. It is hard to describe the happiness that the patients express when they put on their glasses, "....wow, I can see." Many have tears and hugs for Dr. Welborn and his staff. For many of our patients gelling glasses is a God-send. It opens up opportunities for getting back into the work force. His dedication and hard work are responsible for many needy persons in our community regaining hope and being able to see again. His presence inspires and gives Joy to all of our volunteers.
