SYDNEY
NO WORRIES MATE!
After almost a day of travelling over the Pacific Ocean and Asia (in addition we had to stop in Tokyo because we were missing oxigen in the emergency tank) we finnaly arived in Sydney. Wow!!! We were so happy and exited about our apartment and location in the city that we stayed up all day. We will rapidly found that we were central Sydney right downtown next of QVB, Oxford Street and Hyde Park in a luxary apartment.
Sydney is surrounded by beaches and water. Of course the famous Bondi Beach is only 30 minutes drive (by bus) from city center but dozens of other beaches (Manley and Obelix just to name two others) are easy access by bus or ferry. When  you come to Sydney spend few hours on a beach.
Good Day MATE!
Everybody call each other "mate" in Australia. It is for sure a friendly way to talk to stanger but it is the way it is here. There is also no reason to stress about anything in Australia, this why you will often ear: "No worries mate!". This expression probably comes from the time that England took pocession of the island and shipped their prisonners (inmate) to Australia... They were all mates to each others.
Good Day mate,  No worries mate, Thank you mate, Cheers Mate!
Although everybody is telling us that Melbourne will be the fashionable and cultural city in Australia, Sydney is certainly more hip than any American cities. People dress well and and like to be trendy, but not with a snobby attitude. The straight men do have a sence of fashion more evident and it is very enjoyable. I guess what also make an interesting difference is the way the poeple are: outgoing and sure about themself, it certainly allowed them to try new fashion trends. Another enjoyable difference with North America, most of the time people are smilling... The men often look like they just did " un mauvais coup".
The nature is very different. We often see images that Australia is a very dry continent (and it is true) but in and around the cities, it is green. They have kept parks everywhere and it is so amazing to see different plants and trees. Even more, you can hear birds all the time parrots are always presents in the parks.
One of the first activity we did in Sydney is to go to a Rugby game. very intetresting and more interesting than American Football. It was a game between Australia and New Zealand for the Tri-Nation championship. A wonderful ambiance and rivality between those two countries. But few weeks after we saw an AFL game (Australian Footbal; League) Hmm ... What a beautiful game see our pictures on AFL
We both took 10 days vacation in October and decided to go to Bali in Indonesia. It is a 6 hours flight from Sydney, but being in this part of the world all the cities are few hours from each other by plane. We decided to celebrate Luc's brithday with class and stayed in a beautiful hotel and treated ourself with first class service on the plane.
We are not the type of people that can stay one week at the resort hotel. We have than spend our days travelling to the city - where we found better beaches and small local restaurants (warung). We have also took a day trip to Ubud in the middle of the island where we have visited rice feilds and a monkey forest. Compare to our trip to Thailand in 2001, we certainly prefered Thailand.
BALI PICTURES
We sadly discovered a neighbourhood of Sydeny too late to really enjoy it. Newtown is full of small stores, cafe and pub. A good place for a walk if you are not working during the weekend.
Do net get trick by the expression "hotel". You can use it when renting a room, but it is used even more to identify a local bar or pub. We often went to the Columbian Hotel for a drink.
Most of you, like to drink a good coffee to start your day. It gives you energy to complete whatever you have decided to do. Well forget Starbuck... Do not ever drink a coffee from there. In Australia we have found and experience how you should  enjoy a real coffee..
It should NOT BE FILTERED coffee but always based only from ESPRESSO.
We now take a
flat white to start our day. We will make you discover it when you visit us.
Before going to Bali we did attend the second largest gay event in Australia after the Mardi Gras. It is the Sleaze Party. It is a large event (more than 10,000) and we were expecting a lot (a lot of everything) from it, but although it was fun to party, we did not enjoy the music.

In fact it is the case in most of the gay bars in Sydney.. too fluffy. We mainly only enjoyed the music at
Phoenix on Saturday night. A small and underground club with good local DJs.

Our favorite DJ in Sydney: Mike Kelley, we saw him at Sleaze but also in different places around town.
We did enjoyed few hours at the opera house with freinds from Toronto (Yves and Peter) that visited us in Septembe. It was a special (to not say strange) experience but we can now say we went to the Sydney Opera House.
We have been told that the opera singer was a very famous one... but still unknown to us...
