Advocate's murder suspects in court

Johannesburg - The two alleged murderers of family advocate Johanna van Der Bijl were informed during a brief Johannesburg Regional Court appearance on Friday that the local director of prosecutions had ordered they stand trial in the Johannesburg High Court commencing on April 23, 2001. Van der Bijl died on May 7 this year, while visiting the Denver squatter camp where she was doing charity work. Suspects Shoti Makhosonke Shezi, 18, and Zakhele Mzolo, 23, according to court documents handed to them on Friday, are to stand trial in the High Court on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and murder. The summary of substantial facts from the indictment states that the two suspects and two others allegedly stopped advocate Van der Bijl's car and forced the passengers from the car before locking Van der Bijl in the boot. Acting in common purpose, the perpetrators drove to a nearby stormwater drain where Van der Bijl was dragged out of the vehicle. It is alleged that the two suspects were involved in the shooting of the advocate. She died on the scene. The two will remain in custody pending the trial in the High Court. - Sapa.
