| This picture was taken 26 days after the fertilization-- The eariliest picture ever taken of a human embryo. Nerve cord and spine are originally a groove down the back which closes over to form a neural tube. The hole in the forehead is the front opening of the neural tube. The cheeks are beginning to form just above the pale line which will become the mouth. The bulge below the chin is the heart which has already been beating for a few days. |
