DISCLAIMER: I do not speak for The University of Montana, and it does not speak for me!For the past twenty years I've worked at The University of Montana, and most of that time I've been in the School of Fine Arts where I serve as Administrative Officer. If you aren't sure what that title means, don't worry about it, I'm not entirely sure either. What I do know is that I have an awful lot of paperwork to deal with, and get to play with the money.
The University's colors are Copper, Gold and Silver, thus honoring the copper that built the state around the turn of the last century when the Anaconda Company mined it in Butte and shipped the profits out of state. As for the gold and silver, well they're the state's official motto, Oro Y Plata, and were the earliest minerals mined in Montana, if not the most important. However, since it seems almost impossible to find a reliable source of copper colored athletic wear, our teams, including the 1995 NCAA IAA National Football Champions, wear maroon and gray, thus the colors on this page.
The School of Fine Arts, where I've worked since 1980, houses the academic departments of Art, Drama/Dance, and Music. It has superb academic programs in all these fields, training both professional artists and teachers of the arts. In addition to our academic departments, we also have a new program in Media Arts which is generating a lot of enthusiasm, not just in Montana and the West, but around the world. We also offer a summer program in Arts Education for K-12 teachers in the Arts and Humanities. This is the program that most excites me, and I serve both on the faculty and as graduate advisor for the students in The Creative Pulse. Click on the program name if you'd like to see our brochure and a listing of the 1998 summer courses.
Finally, I'm also very excited about The Museum of Fine Arts. This museum without walls has one of the finest collections in the Northwest. Click on the museum name if you'd like to see a representative sample of our Permanent Collection.
Finally, in the near future I hope to have the School's Calendar of Events posted on-line. We do a lot in the School, between Art Exhibits, Music and Dance Recitals, and Plays. If you're headed to or through Missoula, you should definitely make it a point to plan on spending some time taking advantage of all we have to offer at the School of Fine Arts and The University of Montana.
