Dorothy Reed
(1918-1973)





......Dorothy Reed was born and raised in Illinois. After high school she attended a conservatory for music and drama. She worked for Bell Telephone Company where she joined the Bell Players in Chicago. Later, she joined the Indiana Community Players. When her family moved to Wheaton, Maryland she became involved with the Naval Ordinance Laboratory Players. As a member of Hughes Methodist Church, she was instrumental in developing the drama group there known as the Hughes Players.

......In 1962 her family moved to Mount Airy, Maryland. Helen Simpson, the Ways and Means Chairman of the local PTA was seeking a play director for the school's first venture into drama. Dorothy was contacted and she agreed to work with the PTA. Their first production was presented in the spring of 1964.

......Over the years she directed church Christmas dramas, planned and organized a church library, worked as a volunteer drama coach in the Mount Airy Middle School, and served as President of both the Mount Airy Garden Club and the United Methodist Women.

......In 1971 she was awarded the Beta Sigma Phi Award for Outstanding Women of Mount Airy.
